new mallets vs Shimano Dx

SCARY

Not long enough
Ive gotta figure some crap out as far as my bike setup .Because of my wreck ,some stuff on my body just dosent work the same.
I had a couple sketch moments while trying to get clipped back in on my Shimano Dx pedals. My right foot dosent have the dexterity or "feel" to get back in as quick as I'd like in a bad situationand I run the pedals fully loose.i just slide all over the pedal until, hopefully get back in,never mind if they were ever wet.
I tend to heed e-advice on stuff if there is a big enough picture about a product. So, I understand all the issues with the Mallet pedals, and I can justify buying a few sets if it lets me ride my bike with confidence.
Just trying to find something that I can be unclipped and not worry SO much about getting back in,to where I don't panic.
I'm riding flats right now for a bit,but I cant always control the limited ROM of my ankle in hard impact situations or rapid fire hits.It wants to bounce atthe point of lost flexibility and can't fully extend without being clipped in.
Also,I have 5.10 Minnars.will those work or are there better shoes for the pedal?

Thx

Why is your foot out of the pedal to start with? Crash? Stop? Dab?

I found getting back in the mallets was sketchy sometimes, because the "eggbeater" mech was free to rotate in it's body, which meant sometimes it was positioned so if I tried to "step" on the pedal, my foot would "roll" off, because the mech had rotated 45 degrees forward, putting one of the wings at top-dead-center. Not the end of the world, but just annoying during some critical clip-ins. The "tilted" mechanism of the 647s is pretty hard to beat in terms of "clipping back in".

Riding Mallets actually, I'm thinking of going back to Shimano, giving the XTR trail pedals a try. Mainly due to quality reasons. Function wise I was very pleased with the Mallets. I really liked that there was no need to reposition the foot on the pedal, as you can clip in by sliding back or forth.

Maybe I'll test the new Mallet DH, but I'm quite bothered that they come in red only. Makes me think of the good ol' days when everybody was running the red Shimano DX Pedals...

Been on all generations of mallets as well as a couple seasons on the shimano DXs. I prefer the mallets because of the float they have, allowing me to turn and point my hips/knees in corners. Was having issues in sharp T bone corners with the shimanos unclipping due to having little to no float. You can also back the pins out on the mallets creating a more comfortable platform if you do become unclipped. I havent had any reliability issues since the first gen CB pedals

I'm not a fan of the "trail" pedals. I had some for a while, the platform makes it much harder to "flip" the pedal around and use whatever mechanism contacts first, like on a 540, and the lack of the 30 degree "tilt" as with the 434/545/647 pedals makes them significantly harder to get into. I'll say they look cool, cooler than most anything else and at the weight you think you're saving a lot compared to a "DH" pedal, but the functionality is just not there IMO and they are worse than running a regular XC pedal with no cage. Even the mallets are a little better in this regard, since the mechanism "rotates" within the cage, although sometimes it's at an inopportune orientation. The only good part is you could get the 530 trail pedals dirt cheap, like $40 bucks, and way cheaper and lighter than 647s. I found that for that kind of riding though, they just aren't worth it. I'd go XC pedals on my xc and am/trail bikes, and dh pedals on the dh ones.

So,I got the Mallets today.Already ,I like that my foot isnt sliding all over when unclipped.Ill get some runs in on Sunday to feel it out better and I'll try not to break them.

I can't tell if on the release point, the spring is hitting the rubber of the shoe or not.
I have Minnars, and don't want to carve them up too much.
Is there an area to cut out that Will help,or just leave them alone?

Im kinda in the situation as you. I just got my Time MX 4's in the mail today. I wear Hellcats (those are new too). With no adjustment on the bite, the feel of clipping and unclipping is very solid even on the soft setting/recreational mode, 13deg release point. I tried the 18deg and its SOOO hard to unclip  Sketch for me atm. I rode clipless when I did some trail/xc 2ish years ago, went back to flats when I started riding dh.

Good luck on the Mallets man. Im riding tomorrow clipless again after 2 years. It feels new all over again.

Add: I havent felt the need to shave off some rubber on the borders of the box where the cleat sits in (I assume the Minnaars would feel similar to the Hellcats). If I find it harder to clip back in while actually riding I might do some filing...
