Yeah they were pretty clear about their whole "team on 650b" thing. I just wonder what this totally EVO'ed out EVOlutionary EVO edition frame is going to be....whether they're going to be the first to bring a 650b EVO dh frame to market, or if it's just an EVO of their mwhatever frame. Also, EVO.

The track suits them, for sure. So I think that's a solid bet. I think some of the guys who have factory team set ups, will be able to switch around depending on comfort and course. Bigger guys like the entire SCS team will probably stay on 650b for the season, I think.

They're are some differences. No adjustable dropout and they slackened the head angle cuz the larger tire requires a "trail angle steering ,thingy geometry change thing...".....I don't know about that stuff, you smart guys do.
I'm seriously considering the change. Both the Intense guys and KHS sound evangelists for the cause. They make a pretty convincing case.Just waiting for tires to catch up.

650B has me curious as well. I would love to know if there are any current or older DH frames that could be run 650b... MTBR has a whole thread listing all the 26" frames that can also be run with 650b but they are mostly XC/AM frames.

Aren't the current crop of M9s 650b compatible? I thought they were for some reason but I don't recall reading about it specifically anywhere.
No. At least from the pics shown, the swingarm is/was different

I've unfortunately spent more time on a 29er then a 650b but still have ridden a few....but I'm sure you'll have a diatribe about how many you are selling and how many championships have been won on one of your bikes
I've ridden a few 650b bikes. I don't feel a big change over 26"

Can I just say that long wheelbase DH bikes suck for our riding in the South. Bigger wheels and longer wheelbases just make twisty tech so slow. I'm sure for World Cup tracks and machine built stuff, it might be fun, but that's not my world.

was chatting with a couple guys today about the future of the 650 and they say watch 3 of the biggest bike companys out there in 2014 out of 20+ bike models one of them will be selling , only 3 models will be on a 26" tire the rest will be 650 series wheels

Ive done testing on 26/27.5/29 all on the same trail.

26 - 1:36:XX (My own personal bike)
27.5 - 1:33:XX (Test bike)
29 - 1:37:XX (Test Bike)

The trail was a good all round AM trail, fast rocky, loose terrain.

27.5 is coming in strong. They way I see it though is riders taking advantage of their size, ie, taller riders working bigger wheels. I havent tried a 27.5 yet but would love so put some on my future rune to see it how it rides

Whenever I see the words 650b I think of this
Hitchhiker: You heard of this thing, the 8-Minute Abs?
Ted: Yeah, sure, 8-Minute Abs. Yeah, the excercise video.
Hitchhiker: Yeah, this is going to blow that right out of the water. Listen to this: 7... Minute... Abs.
Ted: Right. Yes. OK, all right. I see where you're going.
Hitchhiker: Think about it. You walk into a video store, you see 8-Minute Abs sittin' there, there's 7-Minute Abs right beside it. Which one are you gonna pick, man?
Ted: I would go for the 7.
Hitchhiker: Bingo, man, bingo. 7-Minute Abs. And we guarantee just as good a workout as the 8-minute folk.
Ted: You guarantee it? That's - how do you do that?
Hitchhiker: If you're not happy with the first 7 minutes, we're gonna send you the extra minute free. You see? That's it. That's our motto. That's where we're comin' from. That's from "A" to "B".
Ted: That's right. That's - that's good. That's good. Unless, of course, somebody comes up with 6-Minute Abs. Then you're in trouble, huh?
[Hitchhiker convulses]
Hitchhiker: No! No, no, not 6! I said 7. Nobody's comin' up with 6. Who works out in 6 minutes? You won't even get your heart goin, not even a mouse on a wheel.
Ted: That - good point.
Hitchhiker: 7's the key number here. Think about it. 7-Elevens. 7 dwarves. 7, man, that's the number. 7 chipmunks twirlin' on a branch, eatin' lots of sunflowers on my uncle's ranch. You know that old children's tale from the sea. It's like you're dreamin' about Gorgonzola cheese when it's clearly Brie time, baby. Step into my office.
Ted: Why?
Hitchhiker: 'Cause you're ****in' fired!

Question:

1. Is there an advantage in using 650b in a dh race against competitor's 26"

2. Is there a UCI ruling on using 650b wheels on DH world champs and DH world cup, (aside from visors and skinsuits, and full finger gloves), or they don't have the logistics to measure all the participant's wheel sets?

Request:

Please start a thread here at ridemonkey on
List of 650b compatible old and new DH/FR/Enduro/4x frames?

(that is 650b rim on minimum 2.35 knobby rear wheel tire)

*waiting for someone here to dremel an IH sunday swingarm hehehe.

Well, you are about the age bracket and injury list demographic. And I mean you can't deny the facts. When it comes to WC performance, KHS and Intense results speak for themselves.

Just ask any mfg why 650Bs are coming on strong and you'll see how it's marketing. If they were 3seconds faster then a 26", everyone on the WC circuit would have already made the switch

Remember that we are in the latter half of a 9 month off season. I know guys who have been testing them on their DH bikes since October, watch this space.

I don't doubt that but a 3 second gap is huge. You'd think the spandex wearing XC guys would have picked up on it first...especially since they embraced 29ers so well
