I have had the Hero 3 Silver for a couple months. Its awesome when it works. There is something wrong with the camera and I'm taking it back tomorrow. I was thinking about upgrading to the Black Edition. Is the Black edition any better at low light? Any info about the Silver vs the Black? Is it worth the extra $100?

the black will work better in low light. also it shoots in 1440p as apposed to the silvers 1080p. and it has a setting where you can shoot 1080p in 60 frames per second as apposed to the standard 30. for your average user the silver is enough but if you are handy with editing software and know how to get the most out of the settings its worth the extra $100 bucks

My Silver has been a pain. Sometimes it wont turn on, sometimes it wont turn off, it takes pics on the video mode once in awhile, it locks up all the time. Im not liking it. I hope its just defective.

You are right about the resolutions and frames, but talking utter nonsense about the black being better at low light.

OP: If varying light is an issue, use Protune in Cam raw, which will give you more options post-processing:

bring it back im sure gopro will make it right.
Don't be so sure.. I got the shop I used to work at set up as a Go Pro dealer so that I could get myself a camera to use while riding. I just got the Hero 2 HD but it's been a pain in the ass. It rejects software updates. It's eaten 3 LCD screens and ends up doing nothing but clicking. It now kills any battery that's been attached to it in about 3 minutes. I can't use the camera at all now and GoPro won't even try to fix it. The shop I bought it from has been trying to work with GoPro but they only thing they will do is suggest updating the software(which hasn't worked any of the times prior).

I took my Hero 3 Silver back today. They exchanged it for the Black. The girl said they have had more Hero 3 cameras returned in the last 3 month than all Hero 1 an 2 cameras combined. She also said more Silvers are returned too.

Charging now...

Which model do you have? I don't own one personally but my best mate does, a Black edition. Personally, if it were mine(assuming a Black), I would run 1080p at 60fps. 1080p is plenty of resolution and 60fps will make it appear nice and smooth. If you could squeeze more fps out of the 960p or 720p I might even do that. More fps = better looking picture. The more fps you drop, the choppier the video will appear. Really not noticeable in real time playback unless its like 40/35fps or lower.

Great... My girlfriend just got me a GoPro Hero 3 Silver for my birthday yesterday. Should I be worried about reliability?
I would say no. There are some issues with some of the users in this thread, but in the grand scale of all the cameras they sell this is minimal. Although it is not cool to see that some of these guys have been less than pleased with customer support. FWIW my good friend has a Black since Christmas and hasn't had issues

My GoPro Black turns off whenever it wants to. This is getting out of hand. GoPro tells me to do the update and that you have to do it a couple times sometimes before the problem will be resolved. My buddies all have the Hero and Hero2 and we have never had problems shooting video. GoPro also told me sometime the Hero3 is sensitive to certain memory cards and to try another brand. WTF

I am on gopro hero 3 silver #2. First one was defective out of the box - took about 6 hours to charge (would only charge about half the time even if it displayed that it was charging), would lose charge over the course of the day with wifi off and camera powered off. I lost my **** with it when I got it to trail for first time after charging it up the night before, having it unplugged for an hour (off) while drove up to the trails, and it was out of batteries by the time I got there.

#2 seemed more promising, had no problems with holding a charge over a couple of days, and no problems filming like the old one, but lo and behold, charge it up, everything is off (no wifi light blinking, and phone app can't detect wifi coming from camera), and go ride the next day and its our of batteries.

Would not recommend, this camera is turning in to a headache and a half. Going to return it and see if I can exchange it for a contour, which may not have as high picture quality, but maybe it will at least work.

It sounds like they are hit or miss. I did the update on mine a few times now and it seems to working. I did have it turn off in the middle of a run a couple days ago, but it worked the rest of the day.

They exchanged mine, but it's still having the same problem... every time I put it on, I look like a teletubby!

Chiming in several days late to the party. H3B with only minor issues that a quick battery pull fixes...been the same as my HeroHD, so overall 98% reliable. Awesome quality, just don't expect it to work like a nightvision camera.

Thread worthless without 1080p video. Warning: Childrens bikes and no helmets.
