USAC responds? not much of a response. I especially like the "there's only three reasons not to sanction with us"... I think there's actually four: you provide no value added. so go spank yourself.

I like this idea from the comments in the first Velonews article JK posted:

I would encourage anyone on here, especially those who have a USAC licence or are one of these outside promoters, to visit the Federal Trade Commission's website and file a complaint. It doesn't look good for a 501c3 registered entity to receive a bunch of anti-trust complaints.
I sent one for what it's worth.

I am not expressing my opinion on the USA Cycling rule I am merely answering the question I have quoted. When we put on USAC races we feel we have had some great competition at our races because it was USAC sanctioned. Also, if the racer crashes and needs medical attention, USAC's insurance does pick up some of the expenses where your regular insurance provider stopped. At our USAC races we have had many top pros race, tons of amateurs, etc. We have watched many of our racers move up the ranks too. So once again I am not expressing my opinion on the rule, as I agree with all here. Just thought it would be fair if you heard from a promoter some of value that can be added to a race by making it USA Cycling.

Really, Mike? As in the quality of the competition was somehow improved as a result of USAC having their name attached to the event? Fast people showed up because you had a decent payout and a good track in a desirable location, they could care less who was sanctioning the event.

If the best answer USAC can offer is "but we have insurance" then they need to consider what sort of real value they bring to an event and its participants. Because it sure as sh*t ain't prize money.

And also let's be honest here. If you are racing DH without your own proper health insurance, you would be a special kind of moron. The kind where wearing a helmet is just for looks, because there is nothing in there to protect.

UCI Press release: Strict enforcement of rule 1.2.019 postponed

11.04.2013

The UCI listened to the feedback from the various groups involved and who feel affected by a strict and immediate enforcement of rule 1.2.019 and its associated sanctions. The UCI has decided to postpone strict enforcement of rule 1.2.019 in 2013 with the expectation that all stakeholders (National Federations, race directors, teams and riders) will discuss and do what is necessary to prepare for the rule’s full enforcement in 2014.

Oh hey, look, I found a governing body for my summer DS series!

It sure is going to be a heck of a lot easier for me to get little kids interested in bike racing when I only need to charge $2 for a one day license of $25 for a yearly.
The mountain loves working with them too!

Clearly you are only doing this in an attempt to under-insure the participants and volunteers and to avoid the USA Cycling RaceClean Program. Otherwise there is no reason not to license your event with USAC.

And how can you possibly know and enforce the rules without paying the travel, lodging, and daily fee for a licensed official to hold their clipboard near the finish line.
