Would just like to say that this is one of my favorite shuttles to do before the rubber neckers hit Lake Lure. So burly and fast compared to anything else around. It will suck when the gubbment gets the funds to lock down the whole park and find a reason to back out of the "10 miles" of trails the planning company proposed.

http://app.strava.com/activities/47730005

Over 3200 feet of total descending.

I say it will suck because I saw the location on the final draft that was approved for the trails and they may or may not be burly, but I can't imagine it being done right in the slightest. Really wish there was some way to have input.

Maybe motomike or Brad Stone could get the contract....

What kind of "input" are you talking about? I'll happily pass it on to the builders...
Basically what I'd like to know is if it's actually being built by anyone we know or not. Are the opportunities for volunteers and volunteer input? What areas are bikes going to be allowed and what areas do I risk getting my bike taken?

Heck, I just want to know what's going on. Last I talked to Woody (a year or more maybe), he was working up something to do a trail system for the town, but that was separate from the part for the park(but with maybe a mention of tying them together).

More than anything, will there be a publicly accessible shuttle trail like the ones you got to ride out west? :weee:

If there aren't, why? :(

I feel personally vested in that area but totally in the dark and can't find info about any of it.

Just curious how you do math? I took a look and the highest point is 3521' and the lowest 1069'

3521-1069=2452?

That is still great and it looks awesome I was just curious where you were coming up with your #

What are the benefits of a shuttle trail to Lake Lure? If that's your agenda you need to get on it because I'm sure that's not something that they are thinking about.

Benefits to Lake Lure? Same as Blackrock I assume. And because the south needs and deserves a public access shuttle trail. If they're being built elsewhere, why not here for the
Hard part is finding anyone to talk to.

The route I posted is already there, but from what I read would be shut down. If it were turned into a shuttle trail that criss crossed the final, main descent...you'd have a very long trail with tons of trail routes you could put down that last sprawling mountain side.

I attended the public input meetings, was promised updates and some form of outreach when it came time, but haven't heard word one. Haven't called or emailed Woody in a very long time personally.

Rob, was just thinking of the pinnacle elevation. I mis-spoke.

Yeah, just FYI, Woody sold his share of TD to his former partner, Ed. Ed is TD now. Just got off the phone with him actually, and sounds like the town opened up the project to input from other departments including the DNR, Fish & Wildlife service, etc. Gonna take a bit longer now with a couple more permits added on, but its all in the works.

I do agree with you though, there seems to be a totally different view of gravity riding on the west coast. Its definitely going to be hard to get something like that out here, but its not out of the question. Black Rock is not a shuttle system though(except for a couple days a year), and thats probably the saving grace of it. You have to ride/push to the top and that dramatically helps reduce the damage from over use. It also wasn't developed overnight, those guys have spent years and years getting BR to where it is now. http://brmba.org/history/

Oh wow. Who's idea was it to overlap yellow text on a tree landscape pic? :D

So does Ed or Woody have the contract on it?

Are the going to be design input sessions from the public or is there an avenue for me to get more info on whats going on?

Big thanks to you for the info by the way. :thumb:

There is a lot of truth to this and it is not just due to the use issue. Blackrock has a super cool vibe. I think it has to do with getting people out of the vehicles and into the woods. It is a way more relaxed atmosphere when everyone is not doing hot laps.

Damage from over use and hot laps is the kind of wording that will keep downhill trails on private land.

Butch, I really don't know much of anything about that project besides what I've been told. Sounds to me like its the town that is heading up the project planning so I would start by asking them. TD is in fact going to do the work.

I don't agree with this at all. If you build a shuttleable DH trail and people want to do hot laps it is a success and not a failure. If there is a lesson to be learned from the PNW, it is that it is better to convince land managers that progressive riding is a legitimate use that should be accommodated and not pretend it doesn't exist. See Blackrock, Post Canyon, Thrillium, Raven's Ridge, Stub Stuart and Sandy Ridge for recent examples.

Edit: The above examples are managed by five different public agencies, BTW.

Ed likes to build jumps. That's a start.

One quirk is that the MTB trail system is gonna be remote. There are two ways in and it's all a very long way away from even the town itself. You have to drive around the entirety of the lake and go in the back side. The only two other ways are across Hwy 9 in Black Mountain and from the Old Fort exit on I-40.

Gonna stay upbeat on it though.

I rode the trail on Sat. It was awesome and like bizutch said, unlike other trails in the area. It kind of reminds me of Wayehutta atv trails in Cullowhee. Wayehutta is not nearly as rocky, but speeds are close to the same and it is all doubletrack. Wayehutta can also be shuttled if you know the way, though I have forgotten the way since college.
If anything this trail would be helped by the presence of mountain bikers (if the usual trail work comes with said bikers). This trail already has tons of damage from over use by atv, trucks and lack of water routing especially near the bottom.

I believe this trail is already suppose to be off limits, but there are tire tracks (atv and truck) everywhere. Unless they put a gate at the bottom by the water tower they won't stop the locals from using it as an atv/truck playground. So I'm not sure how they can stop bikers either. The only real issue I see is the land owners at the top getting pissed off, but I don't think that part is their land anyway. Looks like some kind of hunt club owns or leases it until it hits state park land farther up the trail.

What are you...a Cherokee tracker mixed with a detective? Pretty good.

As for the 4 wheelers and trucks, you can definitely tell they've backed out of accessing it from the top these days. The part you saw where State Park is signed is now grassy and had never been in the past. When you shuttle 4-5 times in a day, you get a line down it and get in a big time groove.
From this point on into the summer, traffic is absurd on weekends. It's a neat weekday shuttle that I'd love to run a shuttle service for on weekends.

You're right about the top. A hunt club leases the upper portion and are awesome guys.

lol, no just out of shape, so I was slowly walking up the hike a bikes and stopping every 10 ft. That allowed me to use my minds eye to its full advantage ;)
I loved the headstone at the top of the 2nd or 3rd push up, out on the rock. "The best hunter there ever was". I like their style, that is the type of burial I want.

I also liked the little uni-bomber shack right before the party rock fork. I thought I had taken a wrong turn for a second.

If I ran a shuttle service there, I'd never have to limit the number of runs. The few short pushes are tough enough. I think the most I've done in a single day was 6. The last one was me and Fred Schuldt. It was so sketchy b/c we were delirious. :D

If there is interest, I might set one up if I wind up buying the 1500 I'm driving today.
