They never really close registration due to size of the field but be ready to wait in lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnng line. As I look at the long line issue, I think it's a good way to socialize -and Luc, you need to do that more, you hermit! :p

Get ready to pedal, y'all!!! Westridge!
Oh, he talks to plenty of people... just not to you.

Luc, we are staying at the Summit condos, which are walking distance to everything. We still have beds available, so let me know. $100 per person for the whole weekend. There's a kitchen, big screen TV, etc. Let me know soon if you are interested.

So far, im not overly impressed.
The track shown def doesnt say, "better bring your big bikes up to bb for this new, adv dh trail" to me.
Sadly, it look more fun on an am/enduro bike.

First off- when you resurrected this thread it got me all excited that there was going to be a race. Damn it.

Second off- I'd hit it. Looks like fun, can't wait for them to build more trails.

I'm sure its great for a sustainable trail....but Jesus,...that actually looks fun to people?
This is the same crap that bmx racing and xc racing has turned into.Groomed, man made, bull****.
You should just pave it and put handrails on it.

No park builder will please everyone with one trail. This is a good start for summit. Just as whistler has crank it up and mammoth has twilight zone, every park needs a relatively safe run to draw in masses. It wouldn't do slummit any good to open a run like chainsmoke and have a bunch of injuries in their comeback year for dh. Either way this is better than summit not doing anything at all in regards to supporting Dh. Hopefully Dh riding brings in enough money for them to expand the park onto bear mountain. Since both resorts are owned by the same person or persons, it's not out of the question.

^ Give the big bear boys a break, they got a late start and have been up against a brick wall for nearly 10 years in getting a 'bike park' going. I am headed up for sat and sun, even if its the ****tiest trails ever, I will have a good time. The fact is, big bear is the place responsible for the boom in gravity MTB is opening up a 'park' is a great start.

I want to make their life EEEAAASSSSYYYY

Getting a late start would lend itself even more to uncovering old grades I would think. It's way easier than getting environmental assessments approved on entirely new cuts.

You know if they're starting from scratch for the entire deal this time around?

Good to see regardless. That's what 4 lift served mountains in CA now? The second half of the 2000s was like the dark ages.

I spose..

I WAS looking forward to get back there and ride.

WAS.

But,they should really show it as a beginner trail. If they advertised it that way,I might have not had such a visceral reaction
Wait till you see what happens to the dh trails here in flag...

Exactly, they are playing the long game. Super gnarly tech DH trails is not the way to drive businesses when you only have one or two official trails.

GL was given the OK to start digging on May 9th I believe (or the 2nd). Either way, what they have built within that time has been extremely impressive and encouraging. They could have made an intermediate trail down the fireroad and most heads would have been stoked. Conclusion is SoCal is getting their bike park back.

In other news, Gwin was @ Summit on Sunday and the only encounter I had with him was me yelling, "on your left you wanker!"

To ride Snow Summit again this past weekend was a great experience. Even though I am 9 years older it took me back to those careless summer days just shredding all day with my buddies on the dusty and fast trails. Summit was the reason I became obsessed with DH and DH racing, and I’m sure it was the same for many other people. It will now have the same effect on a younger generation who did not have nearby lift-assisted DH riding, this is a big deal! I am extremely optimistic about the future of the Snow Summit bike park...The two new trails are sweet, and that is the consensus from riders that are more than likely "faster than you" ;) that were riding summit this past weekend. :thumb::thumb:

Rode with my misses saturday and sunday, what a great time. Funny to see EC up there too, Leigh reminded me that it was 20 years ago this summer, at Big Bear, that they both won their first Nationals!

There was a decent crowd, but with 2 chairs running, not long waits. The 'DH' trail (miracle mile?) I thought was pretty fun, and long, gravity logic and big bear did a great job inventing new trails, new terrain and building them with longevity in mind and the most ease of maintenance. The other mellow trail I think is 'cruiser' or 'coaster' and is a trail bike/all mountain style deal with more pedaling. I rode miracle mile on my carbine and rode on my carbon demo-way more fun for me (old dude chasing world cup champ).
It's a long term plan, I was really happy with the start and most people in line were happy, positive people...a few so cal Aholes around, but the perils of so-cal anything. If I did hear any negative vibes, it was generally from the 25yr old and under crowd, who never experienced big bear in its prime (prime as a race destination) and some of these guys I sponsor and some work for me, without getting too long winded as the 'old man on the mountain' had to explain that a positive tone will transcend throughout the so cal bike community and will make snow summit continue to put effort and money into the park. A lot of the younger crowd wanted more jumps and features, some steeper gnarlier terrain, etc...and I even heard that from Gwin on his first run down, but after we did a few runs, the big bear sketchiness made it more technical and he was having fun.

I applaud Snow Summit, Big Bear, Pat Follet for their efforts in finally getting this off the ground...long road ahead, but I think if the so cal community is positive, this will be a hell of a destination. I had a blast and will go up again this weekend.

Mammoth is another sweet destination for californians, and they have made great strides in the last few years, but I remember going up there when they first opened and wishing for 'more'...now they have it and its coming along really well, this will happen in big bear, and for so cal riders its closer if you don't feel like doing the mammoth drive.

Rode there last weekend on both my DH bike and my hardtail. Just the fact that you can bring a DH bike and not wonder if they are going to let you on the lift or not is nice. IMO that was a lot of work for them to get done in 3 weeks and something is better than nothing. Talking to the staff, it definitely seems like they are shooting for the long haul. The haters can suck it.

Back when I was there in 02-05 riding with Orvan, Sanjay, Mike D, Blong, Rabie, W4s, Dog Welder, BMX man and other So cal crew, (definitely fun days that Alf refers to), there were a bunch of unmentionables that were quiet fun. What's the status on that stuff? Still in existence?

That is a big affirmative.

Its not about being the old man on the mountain, its about realizing the significance of this place opening back up for DH riding and the potential for it to become a major gravity MTB destination, again.

I arrived at summit late Saturday and spoke to some of the people I recognized, (said riders were definitely decked out in the latest 2014 gear and bikes) they kept telling me about how lame the new trails were and how they lacked flow, blah blah...bummed me out, and bummed out the younger peeps who I was with even more, they had not experienced Summit (let alone lift-assisted DH) before. Riding the new trails the next day proved those jaded SoCal DHers were wrong, and effectively obsessed a few of my buddies who are mainly trail riders with DH riding, they are buying season passes.

Did anybody ride the new section of "Cruiser" this past weekend? how is it?
super fun. real loose, some flat washed corners which linked up to that mini ridgeline before linking up w/ MM. No more pedal strokes needed on that trail.

So are the old race trails back up and running too?

Cruiser is old westridge, parts of Summit are being rebuilt, no signs of life on Log Chute yet. Looks like pistol Pete's and sonic are completely gone on the darkside though. So much potential at summit, sounds like they're going to have some local competition from at least one other local resort, too.
