When I road XX1 at the nemba opener at the niner tent I kinda felt like it was a gimik and the parts are stupid money. I think there isn't enough different between running a 1x10 vs 1 x11

But if 10 speed is dyna-sys what would shimano call eleven? hmmmm XXTR :)

The XX1 crankset makes for a mad clean 1x10 setup though. Light and surprisingly cheap, I picked mine up for 188€ from Ze Germans (whatever that translates into in your monopoly currency over there!)

how do you like that zee setup? i'm eye f*ing the zee short cage with the 9speed mod for my DH setup.
FYI, I'm currently running a short cage Zee derailer with a 9 speed X0 shifter on a 9 speed Sram cassette. It's sweet. I removed all my chainstay wraps just to see how much of a difference it makes and it's pretty quiet. I did have to adjust the clutch after the first Whistler day, but since then I can't say enough good things about it.Highly recommended if you have the friends/knowledge/equipment to make the required cable mod.

Are there directions anywhere for this mod?

yeah there was another thread somewhere. You basically need to add 4.5 or 6.5mm of washers to the cable mounting area and use SRAM 1;1 shifters, or drill about that far up and use shimano 9 speed.

Also this ...

Very interesting. SRAM 9 speed shifters pull 32mm cable. Dyna-sys shifters pull 32mm cable. If you want 9 speed clutch, run sram shifter with dynasys derailleur.
Would a SRAM X9 pull the same 32mm of cable as their Grip Shift?
I'm going to try this setup. BRB ...

OK.

I had collected some 10-sp parts thinking I was going to make the switch, but ditched that idea and sold everything off save the XT m786+ rear derailleur, which I just installed on my 5-spot with a SRAM 9-sp cassette, chain and X9 shifter.

Everything seems to work just fine. There is definitely a difference in feel, as the shifts take more effort than with the old X9 rear, but a short spin through the neighborhood says this is all good. The indexing is pretty much spot on.

The test ride ended with a flight of stairs to gauge chain slap and as expected the drivetrain was silent. I like that. I guess I have to decide if the friction clutch benefit outweighs the slightly less smooth feel at the shifter.

All I can say is lol
It looks hideous, but the whole idea is kinda gr8. You get proper hardtail geo, lots of travel for rougher courses and single speed. Tire doesnt buzz if You will lower your seat, super short cs, etc. ect. Cannondale made something simmilar back in 2008~ for Aaron Chase.

Stiffness won't be a problem?

Also since the bb is attached to the rear axle isn't it just a clever idea of doing what GF did with URT?

About stiffness - i realy don't know. A lot of pivots there, long arms acting on them, i dont know if they are using bushings or bearings.
1 thing is certain IT LOOKS FLEXY :D

This frame has bb concentric pivot, and yea its some kind of URT. Personally i like the cannondale "softail" better.

on another note, doesnt anyone think that frame looks like a testical destroyer? wouldnt touch that with a 10ft pole. my boys are already hurtin thinking about it

So you just set it up without any attention to cable pull at all? I'm surprised it works perfectly across the whole range. As was mentioned above, the cable pull ratio between the Sram 9 speed and Shimano 10 speed setups is pretty close. In order to make it perfect, you need to lift the cable off the Shimano arm by 6.1mm. If you look at my picture, you can see the aluminium spacer I machined up to achieve this. I've done a bunch of riding on this setup, including three park days, and I've yet to experience any shifting issues at all.

With regards the cable routing, yeah, I never know what to do for the best on the Shadow derailers as the cable exits directly into the spokes. On my trail bike I bent the cable tightly around the clamp bolt. I'm trying the routing shown on the DH bike just because, well, I don't know really...

... or you could acquire a Shimano shifter. I'm running the Zee derailleur with the Saint shifter. incredibly smooth action and not much force required. I like it a lot. If cost is an issue, you could run your setup, however imperfect, until you can find the Saint (or XT) shifter at a discounted price...

No it's not perfect, but it works. The rough shifting is surely the difference in cable pull, and I have every intention of doing your 6.1mm shim mod as well.

Slyfink: just to clarify, you're running a 9-sp Saint shifter?

For anyone interested, I just sent drawings to a machinist friend of mine regarding getting a batch of the spacers made up. These will allow you to run a 10 speed Zee clutch derailer with any 9 speed Sram shifter. Feel free to pm me if interested. Nothing confirmed yet as it depends on numbers/cost etc.

People said this about the soft tail as well, but I couldn't help but wonder how often you're landing with your scrotum on your top tube with enough force to compress the suspension substantially. I feel like suspension design aside, that will still hurt.

I did mine the same way with out any shifting issues as well. X9 shifter, Zee, and a road cassette on my Sunday. I had material ready to make a shim but didn't need it.

hey Ted,
Since you've already done the math/calculation/voodoo to figure this out, should the 6.1mm be the accurate spacing for any 10-sp Shimano derailleur? I'm using a m786+ XT, and I have no idea how it compares to the Zee.
