Finally, after a total blackout of hype and information about this national race someone posted a helmet cam. Top half of the trail is trail bike type stuff, but bottom half gets really rowdy. Probably the first halfway decent national course in a long time.

Yeah ET!!

That mountain has a ton of potential, and Evan has big dreams and real know-how. Make the trip, come out and support... the owners will see this and invest in our sport.

The gopro does not do the course any justice. The upper part of the trail is fast and fun, and the lower part is the hardest section of trail I have ever seen a race run on. I heard more than one person racing pro say "f this, I am not racing." This is a real dh course, that's for sure.

And the winner was?... Seems the media blackout continues. Can't find results for last weekend's ProGRT or NW Cup anywhere. Guess if it ain't a DH WC race, it ain't news worthy.

wow. Makes me bummed I missed the race. Anyone know if that trail is going to be open for riding this summer? Really really really want to hit it and it's close enough that I can bust a day trip there and back.

Nope, I heard it's closed. Possibly the reason for the media blackout is because the trails is...more or less illegally built.

what the hell is the point of holding a really big national bike race on an illegally built trail that photogs can't even take pictures of and nobody is even allowed to post results?? Maybe I'm missing something?

Probably because the guys who put on the race/built the trail just wanted to make a race with a gnarly trail and didn't really care about anything else. That's my guess judging by the apparent media blackout and what not.

balls out on open dusty flat s*** (HELLO SO-CAL!!!) is not DH; the latter part, ok, but shooooooooooooooooooooot - guts out top speed sketchy is both scary and not a measure of skills.

Repeat part 2, delete part 1.

Where is the Gnar? (yeah its there, but only if you're going mach 2) Yeah it's GoPro (angles adjusted) but that looks nothing like DH (2nd half included)

Yawn.

Wow A steep section!!! Keep the angles coming, it's still a yawnfest.

Wide open, where's the trees. Flat blaah, then rock blaah.

Blaaaaah.

No, I wouldn't go; of course not. That would be like flying 34hrs to ride the Jersey Shore! Such a worthwhile effort.

Add hate + clues ~ blaaaaaaah.

And this is why resorts have been slow to build bike parks for us to ride our DH bikes, too many 'gnar bros' around hating on terrain.

Seriously. Heaven forbid somewhere open up chairlift access to for people to take their DH bikes to the top of a mountain without first building a better trail system than whistler and portes du soleil combined. Don't they know how much better your local 2 minute illegal trail with 3 jumps and a rock garden is?

I seriously doubt us Gnar Bros are even in the top 5 reasons.

Although, id love to be a fly on the wall in the planning meetings where "Gnar Bros" is a common term bandied about , anong with "spread sheets" and "insurance liabilities."

^ When I went to the grand opening weekend of Big Bear a month ago, There were a lot of good vibes all around, but I overheard huckradshredsters talking about how 'easy' the trail was, how 'it sucks there is only 2 trails, and one of them sucks bro'...its annoying to say the least. Luckily this was the minority, and I did start a conversation with them as the 'old geezer thats been around' explaining how they will just throw in the towel if there is a negative vibe being thrown around and people talking ****, explained to them this is just a start and with some constructive criticism and positive chatter, things will move in the right direction.

This is california, do not plan a trip here if you are expecting/wanting to ride in the thickness of trees and mud, we do not have it.

The funny thing is, the bottom of that trail is probably the single gnarliest, most challenging DH trail on any American resort, by quite a margin.

I haven't ridden the trail (they only had that top half when i rode there) but I saw the terrain they built it on. It's pretty f-ing insane. And I'm not easily impressed.

Then consider yourself surprised, because for every ROI talk that goes on in a mountain resort boardroom, there is the topic "but what if the rider count doesn't amount to what we need it to?"-thus coming from the hater gnar bros that say a park is ****, spreads around, people don't come, profits are not made, one resort tells another , etc....it all relates.

^^^ I don't think we have to worry about that in Socal. So many people are stoked to have lift access at any of these places. Big Bear is absolutely packed every weekend now. Plus with China peak and Mt Waterman now, Socal will be the mecca of lift access DH http://www.mtwaterman.org/

Just commenting on the trail in the vid, not a whole system, haven't seen it; dont need a lift, but there are tons around these parts, so it's easy to skip the spots that suck, or shuttle the no-lift spots that more often than not, are better than resorts.

Haven't ridden platty - my experience is limited to jiminy and whiteface. I had a great time at both. I didn't consider the trails any more gnar or difficult then anything at Northstar, and I don't particularly consider northstar difficult. But I have a great time at all of them. I don't get why you would hate one type of trail more then another, as long as there is plenty of opportunity for gettin gnar.

Anyway, to each their own, if you're all about learning one trail, and that trail is so good that you never want to ride anything else, good for you. But everybody else who likes getting gnar on a bicycle thinks your full of crap or crazy or both.

Definitely both!!

RM is nice in that no one really tore into me for being douchey; it was fun stirring things up, sorry about that.. Honestly that trail looks dangerous - that rock garden section is definitely skerry gnar.

I just talked to Evan to ask how the race went. He said he was most stoked that the majority of the fast domestic pros told him that the course was both very fun & one of the most challenging around.

But, what do they know...

Over your shoulder whispering
It's amazing how a new trail sorta "sucks" at first. But burn it in with some good riders and suddenly you've got a baller of a ride happening.

I remember racing Deer Valley and I was lucky enough to ride the freshly re-routed National course the year Voulliouz and Peat were there. They had just cut it and the two sections "Barney Rubble" and "Spin Cycle" were idiotic and stupid on my first run. You just stopped cold in the rocks on Rubble and Spin Cycle was the steepest gully I've ever ridden. You'd smack into the opposite bank and have no way to turn.

Next day in practice, I came through and the rocks had cracked, split and flipped into a haul ass highway.

Spin Cycle was INSANE at this point as that shifting sands of a place had changed massively. It was monstrous bank to bank drifting turns and ridiculous fun.

One thing more I remember about Nationals that Stik will get a chuckle out of. Seems like EVERY National I went to had an overnight transformation of the main rock gardens on the mountain. For whatever reason, EVERYBODY always talked up "Lopes snuck up here last night and filled in the rock garden."

That rumor got most rampant at Seven Springs the 2nd to last time they hosted one. :D

and to think about how butt hurt you get when west coasters say that about platty
Actually it doesn't bother me at all, I recognize that anyone talking down Platty is a liar or an idiot and move on. They'd be talkin **** like I am in here, but as opposed to some - it wouldnt make me fussy and lash out!

I poo'ed on that trail, not anybody.

SoCal, Ha! (Stir^32) ( <-- poo )

Usually when I disagree with someone enough, I'm wise enough to not get unhappy about it.

Absolutely not. ( <- serious) public forum, you dont like it, dont read it.

People getting butthurt accusing people of being butthurt is the pinnacle of butthurt.

Everyone can disagree with me, doesn't make me wrong, or want to shut up.

Sh**ty track ( <- see what I did there)
