I am in the market for a new lid. My D2 has seen enough sweaty days. I looked around and have only found the typical new release reviews. I am wondering if anyone here is running one yet or if they have gotten their hands on one? Does is look as amazing as the new release stuff says? Not looking to be talked in to a Rampage or into a D3 carbon like I know many will suggest. I love my d2, the d3 looks sick and have heard tons of good things but would like to know more about this one before I make a purchase.
We are helmet snobs and without a doubt, the very best lids on the market are the Fox Rampage Pro Carbon and the Troy Lee D3. The attention to detail, quality, fit, function between the two are insane. You can find countless resources of information on the D3 all over the internet, but as the Fox just hit the market a few months ago...reviews are just starting to come in.

Since you are wondering about the Fox Rampage Pro carbon...I have listed some things that have stood out to me:

I am currently running the new Fox Rampage Pro Carbon and the work on it is stunning. Sure, at that price you would expect flawless finish and you get just that, plus more.

The first thing people need to realize is that the Fox Rampage Pro Carbon shares zero resemblance to the Fox Rampage helmet. For those who have had fit concerns on the original Rampage, the fit and finish of the Rampage Pro Carbon is night and day to say the least.

The pads on the Rampage Pro Carbon are buttom snapped in place (same with the liner), so nothing shifts on your head and due to the thickness of the pads, the lid is insanely comfortable.

Some people have noted that the Fox seems larger in profile than the D3, but that is incorrect. From measuring both in an XL, the profile (front of grill to back of lid measurement) is almost the same. The main difference is that the Fox side profile (goggle area) is cut further back by almost an inch. This has allowed my goggles to sit against my face and not just on my helmet and nose bridge.

The peripheral vision is benefited because of this and makes a huge difference on the trail.

Ventilation is also huge. Fox boasts about it and they should as it is not marketing hype. Air flow in this lid is noticeable immediately as even the visor actively funnels air through the interior and out the back.

I could list countless things that have blown me away with this lid. From stainless mesh inserts at the vents, the detail at every corner of it, the fit, etc...definitely try on the Fox Rampage Pro Carbon as well as the TLD D3 (which rules), and even the new Bell.

Heads all vary, but everyone who tries on the Fox seems to love it. They really spent time designing it and we would spend retail on it in a heartbeat (same goes with the TLD D3 which is a work of art and leaps above the D2).

Can you please elaborate on that? I am considering the Dissident as well in my search for a D2-like fitting helmet.
The cheek pads keep on popping out. They are mounted in the lid by some plastic pop-rivet-nipple-things - why not just use velcro?!

Also, the glue keeping the plastic liner on the inside is obviously not all that great as it's peeling off.

This is correct and has worked on a few athletes, as I mentioned.
OK, here is an update (for all those that find this thread with the search function).
As a former user of a D2 in M/L with a 59 cm head size I tried the D3 in L and it gave me a lot of forehead pressure. Stik's suggestion is a good one but I didn't have the chance to try a modded D3 out. Now the opportunity presented itself to try a XL D3 and voila....perfect fit! Tight but with no pressure spots.
So don't rule out a D3 and try a size larger than recommended for you and you might find the perfect fit. :thumb:

What holds the liner in place if you cut out the rigid plastic tongue?

Do you remove the whole plastic tongue?

Sounds like the exact mod I need to make the helmet fit me.
Yeah, me too. I'm wondering what bit everyone is talking about.

Pics or STFU, no?

I found this thread via google and thought I'd leave a comment as I'm in the same predicament at the OP. I was lucky enough to be in Whistler yesterday and could try on all the top end helmets just by walking from shop to shop. I have been using the TLD D2 for years, my last 2 helmets in fact.

I really wanted the D3. I have since it came out. I wear a M/L D2, tried the large D3 and it was very uncomfortable in the forehead area. It felt like something hard in the padding was pushing through. I tried a different large and it was the same. Tried XL and the forehead issue was gone but it was too loose. I was disappointed as I was convinced my next helmet was going to be a D3.

Next up was the Bell Full 9. The large fit really well. I liked the matte black and figured the fit on this would make it a keeper. That was until I had a buddy check it out. He says "what's with the jaw piece, your face is almost sticking out." Now I'm never going to be confused with a GQ model, but I'm not exactly neanderthal either. The jaw piece was very close to the end of my nose. I would be worried that a face plant wouldn't protect me all that well.

Finally the Fox Rampage Carbon. I slid on the large and it was ok, fit as good as the Bell and better than the D3. I took it off and grabbed the medium and it was instantly "WOW". Perfect fit, like pulling on a toque (I'm Canadian eh). No tight spots, firm but comfortable padding and it just fit well everywhere. This will be my next helmet.

I since read this thread with the tip of removing a small piece on the D3 for a better fit. This may be the issue that could completely transform the fit, but sorry, there's no way in hell I'm spending $400 with the hopes of cutting something out to make it fit, making it non-returnable if it doesn't.

This post could also be a good lesson that proves helmets are really something that need to be tried on before buying. Everyone's melon is shaped a bit different. I was suprised that I actually went down a size on the Fox.

Had the same issue with mt D3, I just put in a small picece of cloth between the plastic part and the liner. Fit perfect and no issues since then. I figured it is the seams on the liner that hurts, so I deided to add a little more padding to make it a little softer.

If you found a great fitting helmet stick with it.

I had a m/l d2 then changed to a large d3. At first I thought I had bought the wrong size - it was hard to even get the helmet on and then I had a headache after 20 mins or so! However after it broke in after a week or so, the fit has been perfect. Glad I didn't size up
