I got a high-end knife sharpener for my parents when they got a new house in Arizona. It was hundreds of dollars.

Mother of god, that thing was dangerous as hell. It didn't just make knifes sharp for cutting, it made them so razor-sharp I thought it was absolutely dangerous and inappropriate. Hard to describe what that thing did to knives, but there's a sharp knife and then there's what this thing did to knives and I didn't even know knives could get that sharp...

Id probably buy that for myself before giving it as a gift. Which one was it?

A lot. It is one of the best gifts I have ever gotten. A grill is a pretty solid idea too though.
They do like to cook..

I don't remember, I got it at Dillards or something, but decided to go "all in" and get what seemed to be the nicest one. Huge mistake though, because I really felt that my parents did NOT need knives that sharp, after seeing the thing in action. Like if you drop it on yourself you're going to the hospital or it's going to take off a huge chunk of flesh if your aim is a bit off.
