Building an uprising, and recovering from a knee rebuild, so i am a bit weak at the moment. I also live in an area that while not having super long climbs, has incredible steep climbs, most of them are on pavement to the trails. (house at the bottom of a small mountain)

I used to ride a trance, with a 32T single ring, and a 36 1st gear.

Now on the bigger bike, i would like to go with a 2 by 10. I would have to run a 30t ring or less, which i will outspin easliy on some of the descents. therefore, i would like to run a 28/36

1st, i have been looking around, and unable to find many companies that sell chainrings, and they have to be shifting chainrings i believe.

2nd, I plan to use an E13 TRX chainguide, so ideally, i will get the maximum amount of teeth that the 36T version can hold, the tighter the chain to the roller, the less likely the chance for the chain to drop off the rings. The Descents here get very rough, so i think that its a big task for the guide, especially if its a small granny gear.

3rd. if nobody directly makes a 28/36 pairing, can i mix and match? Is there a special ratio that forces me to use one of the already "set" pairings companies offer?

help plz :(

I think you can use whatever combo you want, as long as the jumps between rings doesn't exceed the derailleurs capacity. Ramped on your big ring will shift the best.
In my experience, you should be able to get away with a triple or double specific front derailleur.
I was just briefly poking around for shift ramp 36 ring, and it's hard to find! Edit: looks like shimano sells a ramped 36t that you can get by itself.
Good luck man!

I had a 38t ramped RF ring. No idea why I had one, but they exist.

I now ride a 24t/32t with an 11-36 2x10 sprocket and all is well. Lots of redundant gears, but I've got the ones I need.

No need to have a ramped granny ring in my experience, was running a middleburn 28t granny off CRC without issue.

Shimano makes a 36t middle ring, at least for slx. Might be 9 speed, not sure if that matters. I might sell mine to go 1x, if you want it.

You can get shifting rings from a handful of companies. Here's two options that I know of off-hand:

Race Face Turbine rings. They list the available combos and BCD mounting. 104/64 is the standard 3x mount, and 120/80 is 2x10 specific. Choose whichever fits your cranks.

And, e13 makes rings as well. They advertise these as being designed to work with the guide you're going to run. These are 104/64 BCD only, it appears.

If you're running the same cranks that had the 32T single ring, I would almost guarantee that you have 104/64 BCD.

My SB66 came 3x10 (yeah, I know . . . that's how Yeti spec'd the base 'Enduro' build) that I converted to 2x10. Our climbs around here can get rather steep, so I was wanting a somewhat-but-not-too-tall granny. I settled on a 38/26 combo. Got the 26 cheap enough and it's just about perfect for everything but uber stump-puller climbs. As noted above, ramped 36, 38, etc 104/4 rings are not plentiful and kinda pricey; and I wanted to be sure on the 38 before I spent good money. So I tried my not-too-abused 38t FSA DH ring (no ramps/pins/nada) and . . . whataya know? - - it shifts just fine. I'm sure it would be like butter with a proper ramped ring; but the jump from the 26 isn't so great that the derailleur and ring can't handle it. I was pretty surprised.

I've had the same experience with an old black spire DH ring that I used to run as a double. Not as precise or quick, but it does work!

I've got a RaceFace 24/36 combo on my bike in 9 speed.

I've never bothered to ask if I want to run 10 speed in the future, do I have to change front rings? Going from 8 to 9 speed rear you didn't? Somebody educate me. :thumb:

Do the 2 rings both have to match? Can i run lets say a shimano granny and raceface middle?
Should Be fine. I ran a 36t RF ring w/ a XTR 24t granny all summer. Worked fine. The Race Face rings work well and are very reasonably priced but they do not last very long. 3 months on mine and the teeth were sharked tooth shaped

Most (if not all) granny rings I've seen don't even have ramps, so I think you're good with most combos as long as they fit your cranks.

You can do a 14th jump for front rings. It's almost impossible to find a 24th ring though. a 22/36 combo is sufficient for most needs though.

yep that's what I run too and if you don't have to win races you outpedal the 36 ring just when no pedal strokes are needed and the 22 comes in handy when it gets really steep. Some people say you can walk instead of pealling 22/36 but I feel that pealing is better for my stamina than getting off and on the bike and walking the bike constantly.

No, it should be fairly easy to find a 24t ring. Shimano, Race Face and others make them. I think it is the standard size for Shimano mountain triples now.
