Fox fork not getting full travel.

I wanted to post this here since this is where most suspension experts hang out.
I've rebuilt Fox stuff at the shop I worked at, but never saw this before. A buddy rides a 32 talas rc2 fit that he got a deal on, but he keeps it at 100 (low travel) most of the time cause it's on an XC hardtail. He upped the travel for some fun trails in Virginia but started to experience some loud clunking. When he gave it to me (several months ago) it was at the high 140mm (150?)travel. The issue is that when you compress the fork, it only goes through half the travel and bottoms out making a clunking noise. The fork has never been rebuilt. What am I looking for? Is it the fit damper leaking? Will it be one of those bladders that Fox stopped making? Air leaking from positive to negative chamber?
He's a good guy that's over seas in the military. I'd prefer not to take it apart, replace the wipers and add new oil and then tell him that it doesn't work, but you still owe me for the parts and labor. Ya know? Thanks, EC

Most Fox air forks don't ever get full travel with a reasonable amount of air but it's usually a wonderfully smooth progressive thing that just gently stops like a cloud brushing against a unicorn eyelash.

Take the lowers off and put back one together one leg at a time with the other hanging out. Compress it and isolate which leg it is first. There are all kinds of parts that can break in those talas cartridges too so I wouldn't be so sure it's the damper.

Well, in this case it only gets half travel and "bottoms out". I'll release the air first and then see if it compresses.

i'm not super familiar with the fox dampers but that sounds just like the hydrolock that happens to RS forks when the seal goes and the damper fluid migrates to the lowers.

The travel adjust doesn't work on it either fwiw.

Being that it's a 32 talas rc FIT 100-120-140mm, will it need that stupid bladder thing that Fox discontinued, or will a seal kit work fine and come with the O - ring or whatever that will fix the hydro-lock?
I'll order the seal kit and work on it next week I guess. Thanks, EC

Your damper is likely not the issue. Hydro locking is not possible in the fit damper leg as there is no seal head seperating the damper and lower oil and the sealed damper houses very little oil.

The discontinued fit damper bladder only applies to the older, non inverted 36 fit damper.

Servicing the finicky talas system seems to be your best bet. Too much float fluid could have migrated into the system. Not sure which generation you have but you'll likely need the talas IFP needle to recharge it.
