V10 C sizing

Hi all,

I know that Santa Cruz introduced an XL frame size and made the large smaller (as per this thread), but does anyone know which frame year this started? I have a feeling it was the 2012 frames but need to confirm as I'm thinking of buying a second hand v10C.

I was also wondering if someone can confirm the suitability of the new large size for someone around 5'10? I'm coming from a medium sunday which is too small for me and ride a lot of faster/rougher tracks, so would prefer stability over chuckability.

Cheers,

Harry

I'm 5'9" and currently riding a large V10C (2013) and it goes great, although it is pretty much on the limit for me size wise and I am running a 28mm stem. I'd say you should be fine with the L, but it would be worth trying a M. No shortage of "chuckability" either, especially in the 8.5" setting.

Short stem and 8.5" setting could be a win. Definitely tempted by a larger bike as I loved my sunday on tight local tracks but as soon as I took it to big tracks (particularly fort william) I felt like I was on a bmx with suspension.

Good to know there are people around the same size getting on well with them too, cheers for the input.

At 5'10" with long arms, I'd been feeling a bit cramped on my medium DW DHR, so I tried a buddy's large V10 1/2c (the one with the aluminum swingarm). It felt nice and roomy with the same 50mm stem on it that I was running, and more comfortable at speed. The bottom bracket did feel quite a bit higher however, and that's what I couldn't get used to--the bike felt a bit clumsy.

I am now on a large Wilson carbon, and although I wish it had a little more wheelbase, the reach is about what I was looking for in terms of high speed stability. The reach on this frame is about .5" longer than on the V10.

That's really interesting, as I'm the other way round - I've got short t-rex arms, so a shorter reach with a longer wheelbase (than my sunday) I guess would be more preferable. That would also explain why I found my friend's large Wilson great on straights but a bit of a barge in the corners. Mind you he also had very wide bars which don't really work for me. It's frustrating how many little variables can make such a big difference to how someone else's bike feels when you jump on one, particularly when you're about to blow a lot of money on a new frame!

The high BB comment worries me a bit. I have tried a v10c before and didn't really notice the BB height, but the low BB on my sunday is something I really like in the corners. Is that not something I could tune out by playing with the travel setting/fork crown height/angled headset though?

A buddy of mine is 6'2-3" tall and just bought an XL V10c. He wishes there was an XXL size, but then again he never rides anything other than high-speed straight away chop, devoid of tight corners.

In an attempt to get more wheelbase out of my DHR, I pressed in a -2* Works headset ("ZOMG, TOO SLACK, UNRIDEABLE!!!11"). IIRC, it dropped the bb 0.25" or so, and gave me maybe 0.75" more wheelbase. I preferred most of the handling characteristics, it's not like most Ridemonkey "engineers" would have you think.
I feel there's no substitute for actually having the reach on the frame in the first place, though.

So the slackset will give you -bb height, +wb, and slightly less reach, of course. Raising the stanchions in the crowns would be counter-productive for your intents, and offset bushings are a waste of money.

The reach measurement on a Medium V10c in 8.5" mode is the same as on a DW DHR. Pretty short. And you lose an inch of wheelbase over a large. I would go with a Large and throw on a stubby stem and reasonable bars. Then again, I don't know the extent of your t-rexness.

Yeah the reach on those XL v-10's is pretty sad for an XL. There are lots of Large's out there I seen that are bigger. I wouldn't recommend an XL for anyone over 6'2" or 6'3" maybe. If you're 5'10" and like slightly longer bikes the XL might work for you.

Another vote for the large. I'm about 6'1" but have short arms and actually rode a medium Sunday for a while, but it was obviously always too small. My large V10c (2012 w/ aluminum swing arm) feels awesome, definitely longer but not awkward and can still move around and get through tight spots well. My 5'10" buddies all say they'd ride my bike too.

Longer than some? What DH frames are longer?
Not sure what you are asking here???

I said that it is longer than some of the other large sized DH bikes out there but it could still be longer??

As far as other longer DH bikes out there.... Isn't the operator +-1/2 a cm longer in reach?

Thanks for all the replies, I've decided to go with a large. Just to confirm, did santa cruz start producing an XL size when they started making the carbon frames in 2010? Or was it a couple of years down the line? I'm asking as I'm looking at buying second hand and don't want to get one of the "large" larges!

Edit: Did some googling and found the xl frame was introduced for the first year of carbon frames, and the geometry is identical between 2011 and this year for all sizes.
