I think it's a cool idea if executed properly… which it likely won't be. It need to be a pretty long course a la The Battle of Hellion to allow for lots of passing. One of the major problems with 4X was that it was essentially a race for the holeshot. But the idea of 6 dudes elbow to elbow landing a big double into some high speed whoops sounds pretty badass to me.

I wouldn't mind a race like this using something a bit more Super D like. DH is a bit too hardcore, enduro is pretty much an XC race for fat guys, DS is short course 1on1, and super D has the mass start. I haven't raced super D, but I can only imagine an east coast super D race being a sprint for the trail entrance and then follow the leader to the bottom.

That was my 1 experience of doing a super D at Windham...xc dudes got the sprint and then slowed us all down like a train full of oil cars in the singletrack and the drops (there were actually 2-3 in that course).

ugh...yeah, I think it could be kind of fun to race 2 or 3 other people down some good old east coast singletrack. Maybe a little smoother than the full on gnarcore, but not having to put in the climbing that enduro requires. I guess I'm just not interested in enduro until it takes me to a place that doesn't already have a lift.

you're East Coast right? Have you done an Enduro? Maybe you should get out and do one before bagging on it so hard. I'm as annoyed as the next guy about the over-use and hype surrounding the word. That said, I had a blast at the Enduro I did at Killington last year. I'm going to try and make it out again this year. The ESC seems to have a good series going, and the vibe is chill and fun. My only let down is that there was no support trucks from SRAM or Shimano, and I really wanted my shock serviced when I was down there. With mounting popularity of the discipline, I'm thinking there will be more industry presence in the pits.

One thing's for sure; it's not xc for fat guys... If it was, I would have done well! Instead, my DH racer buddy killed it. Some of the tracks are pretty gnarly. And you don't always use the lift to gain elevation. It's a good mix.

Anyways, back to the original topic. If this turns out to be like the Battle of the Hellion, it would be cool. Or something like a mini-megavalanche... that would be cool too.

Edited to add: this sounds an awful lot like what Eric Carter tried to get going back in the day... right?

NORCAL is the hizzle
That old Sea Otter course is exactly what came to my mind when I heard about this. I'll never forget Cedric pulling tricks over that massive gap in his race-runs. Totally bad-ass.

I always wanted to put together something like this - multiple racers on a DH course but could never get any mountains to put in the effort to make or modify a suitable DH course. Unfortunately no matter what type of gated racing it is, DS, 4X , dual it just doesn't attract big enough entries, with a few exceptions like the DS at Sea Otter. This is what 4X really should be. The closest thing we ever had was the 4X course at Platty where we ran some races back in the late 2000's. Parts of it are still there in the woods triangle above the lodge.
It was a blast but was pretty nasty with a wooden bridge with a steep ass backside that dinged quite a few riders up. The Maxxis drop was part of the course for the Pro and Expert racers.
