So about a month and a half ago I was out doing a night ride and was bombing down the trail and came up on this section where you have to jump a small ditch. I looked up and there was someone climbing UP the trail and they were right in the landing spot so I pulled hard to the right, nailed the ditch and wend down hard. Got up and went to wipe all the blood off my leg when I noticed my right middle finger didn't work... OUCH... It was not pointed the right way any more!! Doc said I dislocated it and broke off a piece of bone where the tendon attaches. This is my middle finger and it is the joint closer to the palm, not the one closer to the tip.

I was in a plastic splint 100% for the first week (now only at night), then for PT they started bending it a bit. After the next week I could touch the base of my palm with manual intervention and it has slowly been getting a little more and more mobility, but I still can't make a fist and it takes a whole lotta effort to even grab my steering wheel and when I can, I have ZERO strength.

I'm sure I'm not the first one out here to do this to themselves... If you wanna tell how it happened cool. What I'd really like to know I guess is how long it took you to get to a place where you could ride w/o endangering yourself and how close to a 100% recovery you have progressed.

Something like this I guess...
  • It happened to me this long ago.
  • It took me_____ to start to do easy rides again
  • I was healed up enough to start getting aggressive again by ______.
  • And now after ______ I don't even notice it ever happened (or) And now even ______ years out my finger is still super stiff every morning and I've never gotten back to more than ____% strength/mobility.

Done that about 4 years ago now. Pinkie finger though. Mine was a little unique in that it didnt heal right at first (4 weeks in), so had surgery on it, then another 6 weeks later it had healed crooked, so had another surgery which finally fixed it. Total time was 4.5 months... For a stupid finger. I would say its 85% "normal" now and dont expect it to get any better. Definitely doesn't grip the bar like an unbroken finger would but its managable since its just a pinkie. One thing is for sure though, be aggressive with the PT and you will get results. Good luck.

I had the exactly same injury happen to me on the end of the last November. A doctor pulled the finger back into place and it was falsely diagnosed as not broken. Another doctor made the correct diagnose, there was a piece of bone shattered on the underside of the joint and the joint didn't stay on place because of that. Two weeks after the incident I had a surgery where an extension block (a spike) was installed into my finger:

After two and a half weeks the spike was removed. The finger was really sore and stiff, I couldn't move it barely at all. Now, four months after the crash the finger is still quite stiff, but not that sore anymore. I can bend the joint to about 85 degree angle and I can extend it to about 35 degree angle. So I can't touch the palm, not even nearly. I hope it will get better, but it doesn't hinder much on the daily stuff anymore, and what's the most important, I can grip the handlebars and ride without any real problems now.
I have been riding for about a month now, so after some three months I started to ride easily, but soon the finger felt pretty good and I started to ride more agressively. I would say I ride without thinking the finger at all now.
I even tried rock climbing at the gym, it went surprisinly well. I didn't put all my weight on the injured hand, but there was quite a lot of strain on the finger and it didn't get worse after that.

I've dislocated two fingers in my left hand. I effed up my index finger pretty good after going OTB; it looked like a squished accordion, and the super professional doctors and staff in the ER all made helpful comments like "OMG, that looks terrible!" They popped that bad boy in place and x-rays showed a fracture in the bone. This happened in July 2012. I was back doing mellow XC rides in about 2 weeks, and in about 4 weeks I was back on the DH bike. I was sketchy on the bike for a good two months though, especially because it was my braking finger, and the finger was pretty weak for a while. I luckily didn't re-aggravate it after the first break, and it was smooth sailing after that. Right now, about 1.5 yrs later, I still can't bend the finger as much as the one on my other hand, although it's about 95% there. The finger is definitely stiffer, and I imagine it's gonna stay that way.

I also dislocated my ring finger after a silly washout; it was pointing at an unnatural angle that made my riding buddy freak out when he saw it. That one I was able to just pop back into place. I don't think there was any bone damage, but I don't know for sure. This happened June 2013, and it was less serious than my other dislocation. I was back on the bike in about a week, and maybe like 2-3 weeks in I was back to being pinned. However, I kept having stupid little crashes and hurting my finger. It was never anything serious, but it got swollen and was stuck in the shape of a curved talon. I pretty much just rode the rest of the season in minor discomfort. Now, about 9 months later, it's in great shape. I'd say I'm back to 100% strength and motion, although the finger is definitely stiff.

Edit: Damn, looks like my injuries were very minor compared to you guys above: I do remember that the first few weeks after the injury sucked. I happened to have one of those finger strengthener things that guitar players use which really helped.

Also broke my pinkie right at metacarpaphalangeal joint (hand still on the grip when I went down in the rocks). Also 4 years ago; no dislocation though. Took an extensive amount of PT (including hand-in-warmed-corn-husks each session) to get where I could close mostly into a fist again. Pinkie middle knuckle stuck out for a year+, making wrenching in tight spaces a PIA. It is now 90-95% except when the weather is cold.

Totally agree with motomike - - do your PT religiously and make sure your dr. referral is good for as many sessions as you need to make things right.

I broke my left hand index knuckle in 2011, 1st day riding DH at Plattekill.
It took me about 2 months to start to do easy rides again.
I was healed up enough to start getting aggressive again by about 5+ months.
Even after a year I noticed it a bit - some stiffness & my mobility/ability to grip isn't the same - I mean that I can grip the bike & am weight lifting more than ever now, but it seems to be because my other fingers are compensating for the lack of flexibility in that knuckle.

I recommend that you see an orthopedic surgeon that specializes in hand. Sounds like you had an avulsion fracture and i suspect that surgery is usually not indicated unless there are other fractures or significant functional loss. Tendons heal slow unfortunately. And scarred tendons lose some elasticity/mobility that may never be regained. I dislocated my pinkie at the knuckle and it took me at least a year until i could form a fist.

Follow PT religiously and have patience.

I put my foot down awkwardly in a rock garden and sprained my foot and broke my navicular in Oct 2012. I was in a cast with crutches for over a month, then luckily, despite a waiting list of over a month for non-emergency patients (private hospital), I was given a CT scan which found the break wasn't too bad. I was lightly walking a few weeks after that.
It took me about 2.5 months to start to start riding again. I was back to my normal riding ability within a few weeks. Now after 1.5 years I don't even think about it when I ride.

Yeah, looks like it is a pretty common injury. I did the "relocation" of the finger out on the trail. The next day I went to an urgent care w/ x-rays and they confirmed the break and sent me on my way. Literally, it was "Yeah it is broken. Go see a specialist."

Luckily I have a good ortho group near me and I saw their hand specialist. They also have a hand specific PT group on site so that is who I go to for therapy. Man I hate my PT guy. ;) He is some kind of masochist or something. The second time I went I almost threw up from the pain he put me through. I'm just glad I re-set it right away while the adrenaline was rushing and before swelling set in. It was relatively painless that way. I even was able to still pass a few guys on the descent back to the car even with a broken finger and wrist... Oh, and blood spilling down my leg. I probably should have gotten stitches but didnt. When I got home and showered the water going down the drain was all red with blood. It looked like something out of a horror movie!

Verskis and Minor threat: I had to skip some PT sessions bc I was in Mexico but I am doing daily stretches and it seems that every day I'm getting a little closer to touching my palm.

Chillin: Yeah, I wasn't going to chance seeing a general guy. Went straight to the hand ortho once I knew it was broken. Oh, I also forgot to mention that I also had a minor wrist break as well but they said to treat it like a sprain.

Jim Mac: I hope to be on a similar schedule... thanks.

Butters: Well it aint a finger but man that looks swollen. Glad you r all healed up now.
