Hey ya'll! So I am back on a bike. I got a great deal on a Specialized SX Trail. 2006 year. I really want to get the front shifting however. So the derailleur bottoms out on the frame before it drops the chain onto the small ring. The cranks/chain rings are not original equipment. I know the bottom bracket is 73mm shell. I am guessing the spindle is too short though. However, I am having trouble finding the original spindle length. Would a longer spindle fix the problem? Any geniuses out there? Here are pictures.

Look up what type of front derailleur FD your bike utilizes (bottom pull top swing whatever). The frame manufacturers website would be your best bet. Not all FD's are created equal. Having the right one really helps... Also look up what size Bottom Bracket BB they recommend. I would chase and face that bitch and use the inter webs to look up a good, cheap, strong BB and crank combo. However BB spacers are cheap if that Old Octalink BB still has miles on it. Take a pic of the left crank for us to better help you please.....

Even if that derailleur is wrong, you can try turning the front der. slightly clockwise on the seat tube so the backside of the cage is on a slight angle, enough to shift. And, it looks kinda high.

that crank spindle will be correct, it's just a matter of having the correct # of spacers installed on your BB cups. My guess is two on drive side, one on non-drive side. (guessing)

You can't spacer a Shimano Octalink BB on the non-drive side..... Spacers might shift the pipe over to much and the non-drive side crank will be pulled into the non fixed cup or BB shell. Its called q-factor and I don't feel like explaining it...

regardless, it's 68/73 compatible, yes? so it's a matter of spacers.

So all things considered it seems like spacing the drive side out will do it? I will grab a photo of non-drive side tomorrow. It is over at my buddies house right now. What if I were to switch over to a newer bottom bracket and crank? Maybe a deore set up? Still space out the drive side?
