Swain is is about an hour drive for me, and I see there's an Eastern states cup DH there June 29th. Just wondering if they are planning any trail development. Seems like the place could be in a good posision to really build up some good stuff. I'm just wondering why they can't use the same equipment they have for building and maintaining thier moto track to develop the DH trails. Anyone know any details on this?

Its been discussed for years. I believe the ownership changed hands in the last few years, and the new owners are more receptive to MTB.

The heavy machinery for the moto track would only be useful on the slopes (not in the woods between trails). And most resorts tend not to do a lot of building on slopes as it generally has to be torn down for winter operations.

They have a trail builder who has never ridden anywhere

They tend to build wedge jumps to flat That you bottom out on or in a location you can't get enough speed to do more that manual off or put a 180* turn with a rooty off camber climb after it

They have potential and the new owners are great people very very bike friendly

Look on swain mountain biking on facebook it gives their whole schedule there is a grey haired guy on a Canfield Jedi he does the trail work I have tried to give advise.I have dh at11 different resorts across the country I feel I have something to offer

I have also offered help him but he seemed offended

True this is the case with many resorts. However when it comes to swain they actually have alot of open woods/logging trails not on the slopes that could be very easily accessed with small to mid sized equipment.(Bobcats, excavator/loader combo tractor, ect.) Having done heavy equipment repair for a number of years, I'm very certain the equipment I've seen there could make short work of it.

having equipment still also requires someone that knows how to build bike trails with it. and the $$$ to run it and pay the operators.

So I made a phone call to Swain today, trying to poke around a bit for info...The person that picked up was friendly and informitive. When I told them I'd like to volenteer some time to the trails, they seemed enthusiastic. They are trying to organize trail work for this weekend, so hopefully I'll get to meet some of the people who are involved there, and be able and find out more. Not sure if this is the case yet, but it seems like they need people who ride to get out there and help build.

Kissing bridge should be spinning the lifts for bikes during the moto x stuff this summer. Stay tuned...
....Sounds too good to be true. This statement must be a ploy to raise hope in WNY, in order to to crush it properly....

I made it out to swain on sat for a bit of trail work. I found out they are indeed going to be using some heavy equipment to add some much needed jumps/berms. They also need volenteers to make it happen. As Swain is the only lift access in western NY, hopefully more area riders/builders will step up to help make it a good spot.
