I think that the biggest problem with Apple is that they innovate in MASSIVE leaps and then sit back and watch as everyone else takes their general idea and not only brings out a similar product at a WAY cheaper price, but actually innovates and improves the product. Apple figures out a market for something and makes something truly innovative (iPod, iPhone, iPad), and then sit back for the next 5+ years making tiny incremental improvements and playing catch-up to it's competitors. Apple revolutionized the smartphone market (I had a Treo and a Blackberry and they truly sucked compared to the iPhone), and then sat back and watched as Android not only matched the user experience but surpassed them in features, from 4G, larger screens, higher resolution screens, NFC, Maps, Google Now, etc. The biggest Apple innovation since the original iPhone I can think of was Siri, which wasn't even that great in practice. Everything else was pioneered on Android, and then 6-12 months later Apple comes out with a similar feature.

Now they've shown there's a market for tablets and yet sat back while 7" Android tablets became popular, cheaper tablets became popular, etc. Anyone want to bet that there'll be a "retina display" Mini coming out in ~6 months, and a cheaper plastic-bodied one in another 12 months?

If I were Apple I'd be paranoid about the rise of cheap Android tablets since the only thing they can sell right now is the App store. But how many of those Apple-only developers are looking at the skyrocketing rate of Android tablets and are going to start developing for them as well? Do they really want to continue making apps for something that has ~20% of the market?

Dunno, we'll see.
Google is just a giant, Apple sees them as a real threat IMO. If Google ever gets the idea to buy Wikipedia, it's all over, because they'll control everything, the searches, the information, etc. Would be brilliant IMO for them to do so. Motorola and phone technology was a good move though and the best move was to get into the software side of things and come up with good map interfaces, good search engines, online documents, and all sorts of things that are hard to match. They they can make their phones and technology that has an entire support field out there already for it. Apple has been savvy, but I think google is really good competition.

Apple's strength is in ergonomics and only putting out something that is really well thought out. The other technology competitors can easily make better technology, but ergonomically they are often behind. Ergonomics is how apple has gotten so massively strong. This is where google has at least some chance, although some of the version 1 droid phones were a bit too buggy IMO. Google seems to have the resources to make very good products, ergonomically (maps, documents, some android stuff, etc). Blackberry comparatively is : "are you sh****** me?".

the big difference between the two is this:

apple started as a hardware company in pre-internet days. yes, they made software too, but that was only because they needed something to run on their software.

google started as a software company, and an online one, and is really really good and managing big data.

this is the key differentiation. mobile hardware is so good these days that what will really differentiate devices the software on it - not just the OS, but other services. google has a huge leg up here. look at the maps debacle - apple went up against google in one of their key proficiencies (working with big data sets ie maps) and fell flat on their face.

google also has a leg up on the updates side of thing; the core android apps (gmail, maps, music, etc) aren't tied to the core OS. they can - and do - update them frequently. core apps on iOS are tied to the OS - they don't get updated until the OS gets updated, which is what, two or three times a year tops?

It just works. Good thing the iPhone and iPad are designed and made so well. So "simple" to clean:

tuaw said:
The iPhone 5, though surprisingly light, is rather sturdily built. And in typical Apple style, the device is completely closed off. Nonetheless, the iPhone 5, over time, can begin accumulating dirt and other unwelcome particles underneath the glass. While this may not ordinarily be a problem, it becomes a huge nuisance when said particles begin affecting the quality of your photographs. Fortunately there are people who can fix such problems, or show you how to "do it yourself."

My iPhone 5 camera has gotten some grime inside it, and my pictures are all yucky because of it. I?ve procrastinated taking it to the Apple Store to get cleaned out because, hey, I?m busy lazy.
Luckily, there?s a guy on YouTube whose buddy had the same problem, and he put up a video showing how to clean out the iPhone 5 with a tiny screwdriver, suction cup, can of air, and a plastic non-marring tool.

Im over here now
Probably 3 years or so after they've made up their mind they respond. Look at all the reactive action they've taken in recent years - copying features from android and/or buying IP rather than coming up with their own. They waited a long time to make their own mini tablet - lots of missed opportunities and following the real innovators.

5c plastic phone coming this Fall. Its not only in the last year that android has the majority of the market. Clearly you aren't paying attention.
clearly, this has nothing to do with what i said

edit: nice edit btw

Yep, and I'd rather do it by selling fewer, higher profit products than slinging high-volume budget priced products.
And the end result is EVERY car built last year was different. The ability to customize your car took on a whole new level and it looks like it paid off nicely. Not only is the idea of owning a Ferrari "exclusive" but the idea that no two 2013 models are the same takes it a bit further.

"Consumer electronics companies sold 195 million tablets last year. Unfortunately for Apple Inc. (AAPL), which virtually invented the category"

Hmmm, so XP tablet must have come out after the iPad, my mistake.

Also Apple is screwed 'coz more is more, might get one of these to film some gigs-

Because nothing looks cooler than shooting with a HUGE TABLET. Almost as cool as talking on the phone with one.

Apple’s latest earnings report was mostly good news for the company, but there was one potentially dark cloud: iPad sales. On the quarter, Apple sold 16.35 million iPads, which was below the consensus estimate of 19.7 million units sold. Analyst Benedict Evans has put together a chart for trailing twelve months unit sales for both the iPhone and the iPad and has found that the iPad’s growth has been stopped dead in its tracks.

They still have their 3D gesture thingy to come, that will be pretty damn cool, also the Samsung tablets have the refinement of a $2 hooker they feel so **** compared to an iPad, ASUS feels equally as ****.

For the Money the Lenovo yoga tablet is pretty cool.

If only the Ipad has forward facing and stereo speakers. Its driving me crazy they way they have done and its really annoying. Everytime my kids use it the sound is blasted in my direction instead of where they are setting.

No.
Yeah, I have a Nexus 7 2013 which is made by Asus, and at work here we have a Lenovo yoga 10 that we won in a contest. There is no comparison. The nexus poops all over it all day long. The only thing the yoga has going for it is the different form factor that some people may like, but the screen blows goats compared to the nexus, it is no where near as fast with a no name processor, and their skin they have over the top of android is crap as well. Ha, I was stoked when I pulled it out of the box though. The hardware is really nice and it looks and feels solid, but they stopped there. But honestly, the main reason not to get that yoga is the screen. It is under par compared to any high end android or apple screens.

I still only use the ipad my wife got as a gift from time to time. Mostly to facetime with my less-than-tech-savvy mother...

Yeah the screen is pretty crap on the Yoga but they cost like $3.50 and runs forever, my internet is so slow that I can only watch porn in 240 so the fancy screen is a moot point.

Fujitsu bitches, buy a real tablet with removable batteries and Wacom stylus input.

Actually, when we were working with our architect on a remodel he had one of those huge Dell tablets, probably ~18-20" or so.

It was about as heavy as a notebook, and for people that need to do lots of presentations it is the perfect way to work. If I was still a road warrior and spent 100-150 days a year on the road doing presentations, I'd consider one because the visual is stunning and beats the crap out of the image from the typical projector.

Think of walking around with a really thin LCD monitor that is wireless. The only downside is that it would be impossible to work on a plane.

So.......... I'll admit I was wrong about the iPad, but I'm going for double-or-nothing here. I'm guessing that this isn't going to sell well:

Wrong, Apple idiots will buy anything. When I worked at Playhaven, we proved that fact on a daily basis.
