Might be kind of a silly question but what are some different options for chainstay protection??

(A search didnt yield much)

Im building a new trailbike and Id like something lightweight and most importantly clean looking..

not interested in the weight or look of the tube wrapped around method..

ive tried 3m rubber splicing tape and it didnt last long enough..

the lizard skins neoprene ones remind me of 2002...

Ive seen some foam with adhesive on the back but dont know where to get it..the 3m stuff I see online is just weatherstripping

Gotta be quiet, sanitary looking and strong enough to not have to replace every couple weeks (I ride allot)

Thanks!! :thumb:

Waterproof mastic tape. Found in the electrical section of the home depot's.

Been on my chainstays for two seasons on my DH bikes (wife and I) still protecting the frame just fine.

Just installed on trail bikes last week, no issues.

$10 a roll or so.

I think thats the same stuff I used on my last bike..it wore out quick even with a clutch derailleur..

I cut long narrow neat strips from old innertube and wrap it neatly / tightly. Wrapping a big old innertube around the swingarm looks ugly, but if you take care of cutting a nice long strip, it looks like framewrap.

Just needs one cable to to tie it up - lasts long, silences the bike entirely and costs you nothing.

Comes out looking like this stuff:

If your drivetrain is eating up mastic tape that quickly it makes me wonder what your setup is? Multiple chainrings?

nope..narrow wide with an x9 type 2

trails are super rough though..i even have the clutch torqued super tight..almost to the point of making it shift crappy

I ride 50miles +/- a week though

Weird. It sounds like you know what you are doing so I'm guessing you don't have excessive chain length. Is there a particular spot it is getting chewed up the quickest? Top/bottom/front/back? Just thinking that with the frame swap and subsequent change in where the chainstay sits between the chain that it may be less of an issue on the new bike.

just along the very top of the chainstay..yea chain length should be good...had the shop set it up when I went to 1x

i use the soft (loop) side of industrial strength 3M velcro tape on both my DH and trail bike frames. adheres nicely, is clean, and has held up well over the last couple seasons...

seems like it would pick up allot of dust/dirt

You could try a combo of things if just the 3M mastic tape isn't holding up. Maybe a base layer of the 3M and then velcro strip on top?

I go with the tried and true method of using an old tube.

I cut the tube down the center and split it into two halves. More than enough to do the seat stay and chain stay. Then, simply wrap it around the bike frame in a neat fashion. A black zip tie on either end will keep it secure.

Doing this has always lasted at least a season and sometimes two. And its cheap.

If you take your time it can look half decent as well.

nope. not like it's shag carpet flapping around back there. of course, it picks up some mud on wetter days, but overall, stays pretty clean. and, like most dirt, anything that does accumulate, seems to magically disappear when i wash the bike...

saw this on the Bike ticker-tape thingy over on the right a while back and gave it a try for other purposes: http://www.bikemag.com/gear/review-sugru/

Syadasti thinks I'm a consumerist loser for trying it, when the 3M tape works just as well for less(see his comments below the article). What I gathered from Syadasti's comments is there are various forms of 3M mastic tape. Perhaps you've been using the wrong stuff?

The Sugru has worked well on my lamps, and seems quite durable.

I use this to quiet the cables where they slap the frame.

Mastic has held up on my non clutch derailuered DH bike (and my wifes) for 2 seasons on my bike, 1 on hers. We also ride "rough" trails (snowshoe, Seven Springs, Mohican, Platty, Massanutten, etc) Can't imagine getting through the mastic that quickly.

Then you did something wrong, or did not use the same stuff I used.
I agree, rough or not, mastic tape should last a long time. My guess is you bought the stuff at the Goleta home depot, correct? They do not have "real" mastic tape, just the 3m rubber/vinyl tape. That stuff does not work nearly as well as proper mastic tape. The lowes in Ventura has it, or just order it on amazon. It's surprisingly expensive for "just tape". I ran it on my DH bikes in SB for years, lasts a long time. It also helps if you put something underneath it, such as adhesive backed velcros strips. Cushions the impact and improves its longevity.

It may be the same stuff Buildyourown posted.... looks very similars
This will be its third year - Works great so far..

Lizard Skins Downtube protector in the Carbon Weave -

- much more thick than the clear one, and you can easily trim it to shape.

If your Cable is exposed as is mine, I've always run an outer on that from the hardware store.

Sam Hill totally copies me. But it's cool... lol

Probably been seen many times - Sam's universal kit.

I assume he's running a full cable housing from shifter to derrailleur, is that hose protecting the actual housing? I would imagine the WC guys wouldnt have to worry about something like a cable housing, like they are pretty much a disposable thing to them. Is it to protect from the chain eating through it from chain slap?

My guess is since the length is made more dense by the outer hose, chain noise gets reduced. When Sam's IH Sunday had Cable ontop the stay, the whole run was w/ tubing. I used to do this before suspension.

3M mastic held up really well on my trailbike with an elevated chainstay. I thought it would fall off on the first ride, but it's still there. Good stuff. Maybe a layer of plastic/helicopter tape over the top if you're eating away at it super fast?

Hit up your local dirtbike graphics guy and get some of the super-thick laminated graphics vynil. Only thing I know of that lasts and doesn't look like an old tube wrapped around your chainstay.

That said, I run 3M mastic tape, looks a little ugly, but works amazingly well.

Clear, thick adhesive headlight protection by the sheet. Cut to size. Refresh, as and when required. Avoids frame wear, chain rub, and deadens chain slap sound.

Other options include adhesive Velcro tape. Works the same. Cut to size. Sold at hardware stores by the roll.

Both are aesthetically sound.
