Linseed oil. Honestly, nobody really knows because nobody is actually doing double blind tests.
Linseed oil does a good job of getting in all the spots and not making a mess. It's also cheap and easy to get and makes great spoke prep.

I used the wrong stuff in one of my frames and on a hot day it melted and came out the breather hole near my brake, hahaha!

I was actually going to start this thread too as my new frame has some sort of electroplating done but it seems it didn't make it to the rear triangle, lots of rusty water coming out after some mud rides.

i second linseed oil, I used to have a cromo hardtail (da bomb grenade) when i was in college,
I score mine with a riding buddy who is a fine arts/archi major (school supply).

it is available in art/painting shops, as it is used on canvass prior painting.

Not making a mess? When I protected my old hardtail frame with linseed oil, there was oil everywhere: inside the frame, outside the frame, on my shirt, all over my hands, on the ground etc.
But it doesn't matter as it is not toxic and washes away when it's still fresh.

I poured the linseed oil inside the frame, and turned the frame around to reach all the areas.
I did not apply/spray it outside the frame as it is already painted.

Our shop does a lot of steel frames and we use T-9.
Spray it in and rotate the frame every once in a while. We let is site for a few days.
Then pour any residual oil out the BB.
