I am betting there is a performance difference between the German spec cars and their US spec counterparts.
Yes, usually the euro spec versions of the same cars have significantly less HP.

You don't really get any admiration from anyone for driving an old Euro car so why not just buy a newer more reliable Jap car for the same money? I liked my Volvo but even doing maintenance myself it cost quite a bit to keep it happy.

Passat is good choice. Jap cars are AWFUL and practical. I rather maintain and have "cult" car like this. On the Defender, you can get 40mpg. Not bad..

Or 35MPG if you carry a spare tailshaft and the tools to replace it, probably use Lucas electronics from the 70's, Poms are useless I learned this when I owned Minis.

EDIT, I've been riding on the road a bit lately and I've had to ride around three broken down cars so far and two have been defenders.

I was also thinking something more like a Mazda 6 Wagon.

If you want something just to be different get a G-wagen-

yep poms are useless..

except those who are governed by Germans. Mini is owned by BMW now.

Heck, if I'm desperate, I'd run BMW engine on Landrover, use custom parts. In the end, not cheap. Another alternative is VW Transporter :D

G-Wagon looks awesome. If money is no object, I take AMG version.

Hummm... the Toyota Avensis Combi 2.2 Diesel looks hella nice and the price is good to.

Are the seat good enough for your size? I have had some problems with some Japanese cars. This is why I love the Volvo. Best seat for tall guys well just best seat period. Just did 3000 miles like it was nothing.

Yeah I won't lie my Volvo was insanely comfortable but the seats are known for burning people so I'd imagine that would stop them being comfortable.......

In the 13years my mum has had her Jap runaround it's had a set of leads and two ignition coils(and an injector service but only coz I am bad at diagnosing things) hell, even the battery is about 10yo.
Their Subaru hasn't been quite as good, the exhaust cooks the inner CV boots and the rear wheel bearings seemed to die quickly, still nothing compared to two years with a Volvo.

When in Stuttgart, do as the Stuttgarters do. Get a 911.
I'm not a fan of the 911, or the Boxster, nor any of their suv models.

If I was going to buy a Porsche, it would be a Cayman. Best looking car of the bunch.

I feel the same about a sports car, but you want something to haul your bikes around... So 911 it is. Plus everyone wil think that you're a cheap jerk for having anything less than a 911 there.

Not in my hood.. I'm less than 10 clicks from the mother plant in Zuffenhausen and every old dude around here drives a heinous looking black Panamera.

You still haven't bought anything? Toyota is killing the FJ, you should hold on to it for collectors value.

Or buy a Mada 6 Wagon that looks just as good and will no doubt run for 10 years before you are swapping out wheel sensors and O2 sensors.

As far as I'm concerned if it has a Bosch ECU it will be trouble.

well- chit..

wife would like an A7 now... but i think they are waaaaay to $$$$$
your wife has good taste :D

A7 is prettiest ive seen of whole audi line. Looks like gentle version of Lamborghini.

Not practical money wise, sort of luxury coupe sedan car.
