ok. so i'm thinking of a new car but considering a used Audi A4 wagon. found a 2009 2.0 with a little over 43k miles. it's a premium version so i'll assume that means it's fully loaded and it's from a dealership not a private sale. so what should i look out for, be aware of. i may not get it but i've always liked the looks and my next car is going to be something along this idea or a compact suv.

What reason for wagon if you can tail a hitch off the rump, the bump is cool with a baby on board. College students like the bump so their parents don't drive them in on moving day. I did it myself in the B7 sedan, just deal with the positive aerodynamics, bills, and buy new.

In hell. Welcome!
That's a lot of dough for a 5 years old car, must be the Audi tax. I got me a nice one year old / 8k miles Acura RDX factory certified with 7 years / 100k miles warranty for a little more than that.

Just a quick look on Cars.com that does not look like a good price. I really like cars.com to get a good sense of the market and look at what else is out there. Buying a used car from a dealer if its not a CPO with some warranty only means you pay more.

I bought my 2007 Volvo XC70 in 2009 when it still had two years of warranty left for 21000 and it had 21000 miles on it.

You can get low milage 2013 Jetta Sportwagen TDI for 25000 and under basically a brand new car. No doubt a high premium to join the Audi club. They have clearly done a great job being the aspirational brand for the young American man.

I paid a Meelyon dollhairs for the Racing Honda. It hasn't caught on fire. It hasn't blown a head gasket. Or had any Electrical Problems. It is however wicked fast and handles like a Race Car. The cup holders and Stereo perform flawlessly. It is all wheel drive so I can do a 4 wheel smoke show (the kids in the neighborhood love it!). I haven't done any Dukes of Hazard style jumps yet, but its just a matter of time before that happens. The Police seem to sense how bad ass it is and leave me alone. I am however itching for a good chase. Racing Fuel is kind of expensive though.

we got a new Jetta Sportwagen TDI for about the same price as that used Audi and getting 45 mpg of diesel on the fwy with boatloads of power is quite nice
a VW TDI was another on my list. the deal they were running with the free gas card was pretty tempting but i've never owned a diesel before and i dont know anyone but some of you on here that do. basically don't know much about diesel so i'll have to read up on them

the looks of the Audi's have been growing on me and it looks like they are catching a high price, at least around my area. crazy example... a 2008 A5 quattro with almost 90k miles had a selling price of $22k.

Things you need to know about diesel cars. No tune ups, no spark plugs. You change the oil, oil filter and fuel filter every 15k, you fill it with Diesel not gas. You get way better fuel efficiency and more power. They drive just like the gas powered one

Also: fuel smells, is more expensive than premium, you get to fill up your car with expensive piss every few thousand miles, ask dan-o about DPFs, and enjoy your 4500 rpm redline. Apart from that just like a gas car.

no DEF in our 2013 TDI. Diesel in CA is cheaper than regular unleaded. We have gone over 600 freeway miles on the 12 gallon tank. the car hauls butt I have to watch it out of a stop or I will chirp the tires

Partially correct.

Fuel smell hasn't been a problem at all. It's more expensive, but mileage compensates, and higher resale value later also makes up for it. Redline is at 5k, but it's worthless after 4k. If you leave it in full auto, most people won't notice the redline. But they will notice the dual clutch's slight weirdness when starting from a stop, and the spool time for the turbo from a stop.

Rubbish, modern diesels have just as much electronic and emissions wizardry going on under the bonnet, sure there are no coils and plugs but wait 'til you see how much an injector replacement or even an injector service costs.

Move to New Jersey so I can let your meter spin as my stock lifts inheritance. It was good enough getting more every time the crazy gets zapped on the ERG machine, though now there is car. I like them eco boos.

My Tdi was a great car, only needed to replace the MAF in 3 years of beating on it all over europe (company car).
Once you own a diesel you realize the fuel is available everywhere, you just never noticed.
Diesels shine when loaded, that's when they trounce gas vehicles in terms of performance.

My diesel trucks have generally been great.
Until the Great Emissions System Meltdown of 2014, during which an EGR failure took out the turbo and falcon-punched me with a $7k bill @ 127k/mi, they have been much cheaper to operate than the identical gas trucks that we ran previously (at $2/g fuel no less).
Diesels have gotten hideously complicated and finding a good tech, even at dealerships, is tough.
Repairs can be eye-watering compared to gas; this coming from a guy with a penchant for older mercedes.

Bottom line: All cars are money sucking, shiny POS that you will eventually resent. Buy what you want, unless it's an audi.

E: Interesting diesel/hybrid comparison
