Not a particularly pretty win, but a good result for the host nation. The Croats played harder than the end result indicates...

Front Range, dude...
Didnt necessarily agree with the penalty area foul that led to the second goal on pk...that is exactly why people deride soccer. Fred oversold it and was rewarded...

Posted this in the animated .gif thread, but yeah, was pretty much utter bullsh!t. And not only was it a penalty, and a penalty shot, and the go ahead goal, but I think that the offender also got a yellow card...

If I ruled FIFA, I'd have officials reviewing the game afterwards via videotape and anyone caught diving would receive an automatic 2+ game suspension....

Yep. That was a lousy call - they really need more referees out ON the field. This single "field" ref thing is kinda nonsense...

I think they can simply give the linesman more power to rule on issues on field...or take anote from hockey and bring a second ref on field. Plenty of room out there...

Or even bring out instant replay.

2-1...not exactly a domination. Could have gone either way. Hoping that Altidore is whole for the Portugal game...
US didn't look as good as they should have but we'll take the win. Altidore has had a lot of injury issues in the past few years so who knows how that's gonna turn out.

The next US game vs Portugal should be interesting... the Portugal player that received a red card in the Germany game is not eligal to play in the US game. Per FIFA rules mandate a one game suspension to any player that receives a red card. That plus the Portuguese defender that was injured during their game vs Germany.

i'd say it was an important win, should help be a confidence boost considering it was against the team that eliminated them from the last two world cups.

Iran really has that social media thing down to a science. Saddest presidential football tweet ever?

And while i find Merkel's hijacking of the national team's success to further her popularity pretty despicable, this is more like it:

It was definitely an important win with revenge being one reason and points being the second. Portugal is typically a pretty decent team but with their performance against Germany that may not be so this time around. Also, with them losing at least one (possibly two) of their top players in the next game it's hopefully looking good for the US this coming Sunday. If US secures a 2nd win in our own group then that would pretty much secure moving on to the next round.

no, it's iran. the SI swimsuit edition would get him stoned to death.
Just as communist leaders enjoyed lavishly luxurious lifestyles, I'm pretty sure the Iranian elite gets to bypass all the internet blocks and spank it like the rest of the free world.

Speaking of which, twitter jizzed all over the eastern seaboard when the US scored the winner last night:

They looked great last night...and then the game started. Wayne Rooney is the biggest World Cup no show out there...next to Christiano Ronaldo.

When they FINALLY scored last night the commentators on the BBC acted like the Cup was theirs. Suarez' strike a few minutes later shut them up good.
