I really like the ant sized stairs. Imagine a High Roller with those instead of ramps. It would roll just as fast but would grip going forward too. Granted, the life wouldn't be good, but it would be a great tire.
The Big Betty had a similar tiny sharp edge at the top of the ramped knob. Yes, it wore off in 2 rides but it was just enough to hook up.

Oh, that tire looks like ****.
But the stepped design, I honestly think that could be the best thing ever for a do everything rear tire.
Like you said, that's existed in some capacity on other tires. Hell even the old panaracer fire xc tires had something similar........and it worked well. And I'm with you, if you're going to ramp the leading edge on a tire you'll be climbing on, oh yeah, it's a good setup. It's the one shining 'not retarded' thing about that tread design. But then they got all retarded by putting off center

Am I crazy I liked the XC version of the Fire? I used them a long time ago but they were surprisingly decent if you could live with the paper thin wall.

As for Maxxis maybe they saw Gwins ride and thought that since some riders don't need tires why should they try to make something good?

That was one of the tires that first made me start geeking out on tires. You remember they had a 'front and rear' orientation according to the sidewall? Ever notice how much better the back worked when it was run the same as the front? That's those side knob angles/cups.

Those weren't too bad if you cut off all the knurled intermediate knobs. Way too rounded otherwise (this this thing from maxxis). But yeah, I thought that stepped ramp thing worked great for climbing bite. I think I stuck a dh tube in my rear tire at one point I would tear them up so much though.......

Glad I wasn't the only one, I used those tires for years on my XC bikes. They came in a few different colors and I actually bought the yellow sidewall versions for one race. They were/are relatively inexpensive as well.

Well part of the reason I started geeking out on them was that I didn't think they were particularly that great when used 'as is' ;)

But all those tires like the fire xc, a bunch of the Michelins etc that had front and rear suggested directions were what made me start looking at what knob shapes do what, and why. It's so loose here midsummer that little things like that really stand out quickly.

Its hideous but I'll try it in the rear..

I'm pretty much desperate for a good rear right now...not liking the ardent that much in the back..running an X-king right now but its totally smoked in 8 rides and their "protection" sidewall is garbage...stiff as a board and it is not holding up at all...

Id throw on a HR2 in the back but Im really preferring something a bit more drifty lately....Id get a rock razor but I dont want to spend 70$ on a tire thats going to last me a couple weeks...think Im going to try a maxxis ikon next...wishing they made a crossmark in 650b 2.25 exo My only regret about 650b is not being able to buy 27$ Larsen's

maxxis has to release a new simi slick...keeping my fingers crossed for Larsen TT center with HR or minion sideknobs..

Did you check the ADVantage? I'm currently running an Ardent in the front and an ADVantage in the rear, both in 2.25".

you crazy!
People always ask me, "How's that HR2 up front?" like its so weird or something but I dont really get it. As long as you commit to the sideknobs I think it hooks up good...I just ran a Conti Trail King the other day when I borrowed a friends wheel and It may have been slightly less drifty but I felt the overall amount of grip was similar when deep in a corner..maybe its just the fact that Im riding loose over hardpack..i dont really know..

I havent ran a minion in years..maybe I should try one again..it was my favorite tire when I rode a dh bike..Only thing is its only available in 2.3 in 650b and I definitely like a bigger tire up front especially with my wide rims..
