I've been downgraded from a grade 1 to a grade 3-5.

I fell on my head/shoulder on the 13th. went to the ER cause my lung was making funny noises...

the doctor said my shoulder was a grade 1 separation.

Went to the sports doctor today, got new X-rays and it's clearly fvcked. The doctor said it's an upper 3 to grade 5.

recommends surgery.

Not stoked.

My buddy had that surgery. It took a while to heal but once it did he said that he now knows that years of rock climbing and Mt biking trashing of his shoulder had degraded it long before his double black diamond ski yard sale wiped it out. It is now better than it has been in the past 15 years,

hands only go numb when pedaling on exercise bike. not when sitting on couch.

what in the hell am I going to do for six months when I can't do anything? I think I've already watched everything on hulu+ and netflix in the last 2 weeks that I've been on the couch. BORING.

the fact that you had a separation may have shifted the nerves slightly out of place, so when you are putting load on your arms when riding, it may be pinching the nerve.

Well the world is full of things to do so get your ass of the couch and get out and explore. Legs can still walk so that is an option too not sure when you could start to do some running/jogging to.

First, working in the medical field, I say get a second opinion. I had a fractured tibia from motocross. One doctor was literally talking about pins and screws, another doctor said crutches for about 8 weeks. I took the crutches, and am doing great. Remember, some doctors are behind on their bills so they need to make money where they can, and it can skew their intentions. :thumb:

If I were you:
-Read about complimentary and alternative therapies and try them (if able to walk around) if efficacy is high enough and it is not against doctor's orders.
-Read about forex/stock trading and/or try to make money from your computer at home so you can have more fun later, that way the time isn't entirely wasted.
-Read self-improvement/social relations/career specific books to hit the road harder when you get back to life.
-Play video games.
-Call a phone sex line, eat bacon and drink beer.
-Learn about diet, nutrition, and physiology to improve your riding and healing.
-Practice math.
-Learn to juggle cantaloupes and masturbate with your feet.
-Sell things on ebay.

this was the second opinion. I'm seeing someone else next week too...

4xboy - how long ago was your injury, how long did it take to recover, do you have full range/strength and what do you do for work?

also, the doctor wasn't insisting on surgery. I could leave it as is but he said I wouldn't have full range/strength and healing time will be around 3 months. with surgery, healing is 6 months.

One year ago, Full motion/most strength maybe two months, Machinist, heavy lifting, can't throw a baseball straight, but I never could before. I don't really have pain or problems.

The doctor I had said, you want symmetry and a scar? surgery, don't care about looks, leave it.

I am 38 and have never been very caring of my body, big jumps, bad falls, hard work. Everything hurts in the morning.

4xboy - thanks for the details.

Sorry if you've answered this already (in another thread..) but what grade/stage/whatever was your injury? Your x-ray looks really similar to mine. Doc definitely wasn't pushing for surgery. Said I could wait and do it whenever I wanted or not do it at all. Everything I've read online says upper grade 3-5 is surgery bound.

I'm 43 (44 next month) and have beat the crap out of my body for 30+ years. Pain has always been a part of my daily life but bmx/dirt jumping is a must for me. I don't care what my body looks like, as long as it works 100%.

My wreck was two weeks ago and I've gained a lot of strength/ROM but I'm still in some pretty amazing pain. and my shoulder clicks/pops when I do some over the head arm lifts.

I have no idea where I am
I've had multiple shoulder injuries where a dr. recommended surgery each time. I opted to try physical therapy first for a while and each time the shoulder healed. And all without surgery.

One Orthopaedic Surgeon told me I had multi-directional dislocation, worn out cartilage, and stretched or torn tendons. Basically the unholy trinity of shoulder injuries. It would pop out of the socket frequently, and eventually became very painful and weak. Dr. Creepy Littleman smirked at me after delivering his diagnosis and with a glimmer in his eyes, much like that of most downhillers pre-run, says "you're going to need surgery."

I went to a Physical Therapist for a few sessions and learned the stretches needed for recovery. I kept up at home with the exercises and eventually my shoulder stopped dislocating and it tightened up.

I'm just not a big fan of elective invasive medical procedures. If there is an alternative that's gentler on the body, then I'll try it. Getting cut on is a last result.

Apologies if I already responded on your original thread, but my right shoulder looks like that as well, and at this time has complete pain free, functionality. According to my orthopod, he said I tore all the connective tissue which attaches the collar bone (distal end I think) to, well, I dunno - the top of my shoulder. So it just floats around now and makes some clicky noises, but otherwise I forget it even happened. I forgot what grade sprain I was diagnosed with, but something in the middle range. Anyway, orthopod said the same as 4X 's doc said - it's just aesthetics and you really don't want me digging around in your shoulder unless you absolutely need me to.

Oddly enough, it's my left shoulder now that appears to in a decaying orbit, but since I can still pound the bishop, I'm not too concerned at this point.

And since you've already got tatted, you may be to take advantage of my idea - an eyeball coming through the skin ala Army of Darkness and Bruce Campbell awesomeness. Either that or I was gonna go all Race Face and get topo lines on it.

Same. My left shoulder looks like that too. Grade 3 - No ligiments left in there.

Only a PIA when trying to do heavier weight benchpress and pullups.

Errr... I hate to be the one to break this to you - but those days are over. Unless, of course, you accept 80% as the new 100%.

Lies...

Old injuries and the associated chronic pain can be mitigated through advances in medical science (especially the "science" practiced at a strip mall office location). You just may need to get some bigger hats.

Thanks for everyone's help.

I'm not doing the surgery. Saw the PT guy yesterday and he agreed.

Any suggestions for what size medicine ball I should buy? I have a basketball but it seems pretty light. I'd like to buy a real ball for rehab but don't want one that's too heavy.

thanks again folks!

So, it's been four weeks since I fell.

I've been riding the exercise/trainer bike everyday for about 20-35 minutes and doing my shoulder P.T.

Is it normal for the pain to seem to get worse? It aches so damn much. Maybe it's now in the healing stage or something? Sh1ts annoying.

All day aching.

I had some crazy cramping going on around the joint in my back and chest for a while. In my case it was those muscles getting used to their new shoulder-stabilizing duties. Really sucks, but it went away after a while.

Ask your physio about the pain. If your exercises hurt, don't do them so intensely/as far into the range of motion. You might just need to modify them a bit.

Sucks to be injured, but don't rush it.

And if possible, see a sports doc. I was on a "wrong" path with a physio for a couple of months when I was having shoulder issues. I got a referral to a sports doc and he switched up my exercises pretty significantly. I improved almost immediately.

I'm working with the UW Sports Clinic so I think I'm in good hands.

Yea, I think this pain is the muscles healing and re-adjusting.

So boring....
