The comments section under the NSMB article is precious (imagine me saying that in a Gollum voice).

Dude, my mind is going to mush hearing that dirk guy not get it a million times. Udi is a gracious fellow- I don't think I could explain something like that so many times.

...I had to take a break, and I'm not even to the part where Cam McRae gets pissed!

PS- I would love to hear the SC guy chime in!

I just read the NSMB comments too... quite exhausting.
This topic would be much simpler if everyone just adopted the 'Motion Ratio' metric rather than 'Leverage Ratio' (MR = inverse of LR).
If you're a Linkage user, the MR curve is obtained by clicking the 'geometry' tab.

You have real things to do, leave the internet bickering to the mortals (and me - according to the comments I'm not human).

I do agree that LR and MR are confusing, but at the point where you are given instantaneous numerical leverage values (at 2 ends of a relatively linear part of the curve) it really should cease to become confusing, and I think that guy was just choosing to ignore what was in front of him.

I don't really know whats going on, but keep me posted on what the best bike is so that I can plan my next purchases accordingly.

Nah, I want to buy something that can win races too. When was the last time giant won something? 2008? 2009? If my bike model has never won a race, how can I be sure I'll win when I race my friends

with threads like these, I wouldn't say he's suspiciously silent... I wouldn't bother answering either. Udi has valid points, but may have come off a bit harsh at first. others were simply harsh imo. I appreciate the debate, but the name calling was a little unwarranted, especially when we know joeg has been a helpful resource for us in the past... maybe he has a thicker skin than me and will come back. I sure hope so.

Fo sure.

He learned to ignore pedantic ass munchers years ago because he actually has real work to do.

Because this is what happens........ He rattles off something that even he would admit is an overly simplistic "general concept" kind of thing and people who already understand very simple concepts yet think they're geniuses because of it, jump all over the details as if it were presented as some precise technical treatise, not more of an abstract.

Those 'graphs' are pretty much in crayon fer cryin out loud. What more do you need to spell out 'this is not a graduate level presentation on suspension kinematics?'

I wouldn't respond either. Because responding would be acknowledging some kind to validity to completely missing the point™.

"Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler"

Simplify something too much and it will become misleading or incorrect fast. For those who already understand this stuff 100% - it doesn't matter - but for those who don't, articles like these probably aren't helping much. Assuming your post is directed at me, I think you're failing to make the distinction between "an abstract" and "a skewed representation of reality".

I have no doubt that a qualified engineer's understanding extends beyond what is discussed here, but on the other hand these frames' weak points happen to be exactly in the areas which are explained insufficiently or incorrectly in the article. Do you think this is a coincidence?

Oh don't get me wrong, I get just as much a kick out of the representation of santa cruz suspension behavior as you do. But you know you're capable of grasping the ideas he was shooting for through the context he used.

I saw that whole piece as more an attempt to describe the terms 'rising/falling/linear/progressive/regressive' to someone who had no clue more than anything. And it does that. "Skewed vs. Abstract" sure. It's not what I would have written and it's certainly not what you would have written but so what? Sure, kick around the weird use of 'cavitation' but the staring down your nose from your high horse when you address it really isn't necessary.........and certainly doesn't facilitate any sort of response from the author when the two of you are engaging in very different sorts of discussions. Which is why I said that.

Given the response to that nsmb bit, seriously, write a better overview of terms, concepts and examples as an article (you know it wouldn't be difficult). I'm sure vital or pinkbike or even nsmb would use it. There's obviously some interest, and you'd get a much better audience than one provided by a comments section or this dead forum no one even reads anymore.

But as always, if you want to talk shit about santa cruz suspension designs, I'm fully on board! :D

Yeah fair call. In all honesty I wish they'd get it together because they build light frames that are quite durable (which not everyone does) and if they sorted out their suspension they'd have a very competitive option in a fast-growing segment.

Best bike they ever made a keyd you know I'd tell you if it were otherwise. :D

I really really really wish they'd do their trail bikes like that one.[/QUOTE]
Okay, thanks. I thought i liked it alot, but didnt know if i made a mistake by doing so. Let me know if anything changes.

Will do. Shoot me your phone number and I can set up an alert system if that red stripe suddenly becomes passe or anything. You wouldn't want to be caught off guard out on a ride with a bike that suddenly becomes unfun without you knowing about it.

How about a phone app? Woo Alerts, or something snazzy like that. Let the bobos know what's the flavor of the moment.

Well fack. After reading all this my vpp bike suddenly became no fun to ride any more. DAMN YOU RIDEMONKEY.
That happened to me too.
One look at the tire thread and suddenly I could no longer corner on my Schwalbe tires.

holy fucking shitballs. You leave the hemisphere for a few weeks to go ride bikes that don't have rear suspension and a goddam innernet bush fire breaks out. as i weed through the commentary, i had a couple things come to mind.

1. you pedantic asshats really need to chill the fuck out. not saying everyone, but there are some people who don't seem to get validation in their offline lives and seek it elsewhere.
2. nsmb should reconsider the practice of using 5 year old "engineering" stuff written on a manufacturers website and posting it as "new content". Had I been aware of their intentions or activities, that would have never been posted (its been online for five years on SCB website, this is not new material)
3. anger welled up inside me on the nsmb headline used. its douchey. never imply that i'm gonna "school you" (i'm wrong more than 50% of the time just due to not shutting the fuck up)
4. i know my shit stinks, but there are some commenters who don't fart, never mind poo. But they have the amazing ability to be able to discern in my and others' turds the scents of each bite taken with a level of skill that seems unreal for one not passing stools on a regular basis.
5. I can't wait for the ridemonkey kickstarter campaign so I can get a decent bike to ride.
