10 speed chains are disappointing for DH use. I have destroyed far more of them than I ever did 9 speed chains.

Anywho, 9 speed parts are too much of a pain in the ass to find consistently, so 10 speed it is.

Suggestions? I have exactly one race weekend on my current chain and it already has two seized up links.

What brand of chains are you using, and do you lube up, or go in dry?

I found SRAM 10 speed crappy, and KMC is my go-to 10 speed chains.

First destroyed chain was the shimano something or other that came with a complete bike purchase. The latest (I've only been on 10 speed for a handful of races now) chain had 6 practice runs and 1 race run on it. This one was a KMC x10L.

most of my 9 speed chains were just the cheapest sram 9 speed I could get my hands on.

Anyway, the latest chain has 2 links that are all jammed up.

@supercow I go in reasonably lubed over night, excess wiped off in the morning before riding.

I had terrible luck with Shimano 10-speed chains on my ENDURO® bike. Sram chains seem to be working much better. To be fair, this is how I remember my experience with 9-speed also.

Really? If you shop online, there's no issue. See: jensonusa.

Really? I spent 3 months looking for a 9 speed sram shifter to replace a broken one last fall. See chain reaction, pricepoint, jenson, universal, etc.

Doesn't really matter, I own nothing 9 speed anymore so I'm not going back to it.

I haven't owned a sram 10 speed chain yet on the DH bike, but had no problems with them on the trail bikes, I'll give that suggestion a go.

Thanks

Gotcha. Shifter might be one of the rarer bits... all over ebay fwiw. Shimano 9spd currently on the site, $64:

I hear you though.

Yes, but I wasn't looking for shimano, nor were there any on ebay at the time. Again, moot point, I've gotten new bikes since then and don't own anything 9 speed and have no desire to switch back to something that can be difficult to find replacement parts for.

Shit, this thread isn't even about 9 speed, it's about finding a more durable 10 speed chain.

I stock pile 9 speed shimano dura ace (they are cheap) whenever i can find them.

I used it for my DH (1x9 Sram XO) and trail bike (2x9 shimano XT).

Upgraded to the DLC X10SL this season, I'd do two X9SL or X10SL each year regardless if I need to change them. KMC chains are great, I've only had problems with chains on bikes I borrow.

where the trails are
KMC work great. AND you can get 'em in black and everyone knows that metal > enduro :rockout:

To those having trouble with Shimano 10-sp chains ... are you aware that the plates are made so that the chain is directional?? Maybe your bad shifting experiences are due to backward chains?
