Im over here now
Im looking to open up a dog park in my development with hopefully some support from the numerous dog owners in my hood. We unfortunately have a bullshit HOA that could prove to be a a hurdle in this plan but before presenting them with this idea, I wanted to go around to all the houses and ask the dog owner's the maximum theyd be willing to contribute to this plan and then have a consolt with a few fence companies to get a price. From the few dozen people ive already spoken to, all have been willing to help support this 100%.
There arent many dog parks in the area and was curious as to what youd want to see as a dog owner going to a park. A few ideas that are fairly obvious are a tall fence, sally port for an entrance, poop bags w/ trash and a rules board. anything else?
what are your thoughts on what youd want?

I think having a few basic "obstacles" for dogs and owners to mess with is fun. Even just an little elevated run thing and some weave poles, or maybe one of those big triangles. My pooch loves running over stuff like that.

Cool idea- good luck!

From what I see at the local dog parks, they are a magnet for talent...if ya know what I mean. :brows:
for some reason i was reminded of a song...

does this sound simple...fuck you....are you for sale....does fuck you sound simple enough...this was the only part that turned me on...and he was candy all over....

name that tune...

The local dog park to me only has a 4' fence. There are 2 sections, a large one for larger dogs, and a smaller one for smaller dogs. Smaller dogs are allowed in the large section, but large dogs are not allowed in the smaller section.

You should also consider a bench or 2.

Like Quo said, around here there are usually two areas, one for bigger dogs and one for smaller. Same rules, little dogs are allowed in the bigger one but not the other way around. Other than that the runs themselves are pretty basic, benches, some trees, bags.

Dog parks are a bad idea, period. Take your dog out on the trails with you to exercise it, or only get together with other people whose dogs you know and trust.

well since you said period, that must be the final answer. i mean, some random dog training blogger must have all the answers right?
thanks for the suggestion (i guess,) but i do take my dogs out in parks, trail rides, dh rides and long walks on the beach at sunset. most trainers ive spoken to are not at all against it like your canuck friend but some do, have their reservations

im still moving forward by getting appraisals for fencing for the two separate areas as suggested and as ive seen at other parks. we're also still working on a plan with getting info from all of the residents in our private community as well as trying to keep those who are not living in the community out. there are several dog owners who dont live in our development that walk their dogs in our 'hood. id ideally like to initially keep it to residents only but am open to the idea of eventually opening up to everyone (cringe.) im thinking a passcode that is given with a donation to help fund the project.

once upon a time i was bit by a chow at a vet clinic i worked at.....i was the last person he bit....he was put down....the owner was a dog trainer.
wait was the dog on a biting rampage at the clinic? did they sink the syringe in him seconds after he bit into your ankle? i'm picturing a scene of mass chaos

no.

the dog was being boarded....had been boarded before....i was the only one willing to walk it....he did not like having a lead put around his head...the owner had had problems with dog at his home...

It was a chow. When I did the work study thing at the animal shelter every Chow automatically got an potentially aggressive sign on the cage. No other breed got such a warning unless it actually showed aggression.

I did a "good dog park trip" on a dog forum I visit, and started a $hit storm. Very touchy subject. Have visited about 4 different parks, and Icon or I have never had a bad visit. To each his own on liking them though.

Separate big dog / little dog areas are good.

really? should I be worried (or at least extra vigilant) when I bring my kids over to my buddy's place who has a Chow? the dog seems really mellow. like it's in the bong shed all day, every day....

It's hit or miss like any dog--but I was attacked by my friend's giant scary chow Conan in secondgrade--drug me across the property until I was able to get myself over the property line... I had to be holding a house-dwellers' hand to be on that property. Also have a current friend who had an amazing chow, Lowa! She did not like kids though. I think they must have some strong natural protector blood in them.
