WORLDS

¡Mira, una ardilla!
it more seems like different strokes for different folks. nico used the whole wc season to tune up for the champs, where gwin seems to be more into winning the overall.

would you rather put in the best record in the regular season, or win the playoffs?
I guess a cold-minded racer would choose the WC over Worlds, but Gwinn had just bad luck, as Gee and all the others who crashed. He went all in and ended up going off track.

Quick question to those better informed, when was the last time somebody won both the WC and the Worlds?

Gee's run. Massive respect getting up after that smash.
it must have been so brutal for a guy like him to take that long to regroup. He's a tough dude! I liked it when he was more in the mix- hopefully he can get that speed back next year

Holy fuck those guys pin it...
I watched the whole race and it didnt do that track any justice at all.

You can clearly see the rock that Gee clipped, not something Id expect from him tbh...
Coulda been a little gassed goin full tilt like that...

Gee gassed on the upper part of the track is the part i didnt expect ;)
He was also a couple seconds back at the split if i remember correctly.
I had the same thing on my xc bike a while ago tho, full speed, never saw it coming and couldnt walk for days... But im a hack so its different :D
Ahhh, got ya!
The pedal catch has to be one of the worst- always seems completely out of nowhere

Gee is tuff, I'll give him that. He's also quiet. I would have been swearing like a sailor for the rest of my run after a wreck like that and under those circumstances.

Like Rachel said pre-race, she can win every World Cup but the only race the sponsors care about is Worlds.

And some, apparently, don't even remember that the ladies race.
I did think we were talking men's, but great point.
Also, I had no idea sponsors were so worlds-focused...

That jersey has a ton of cachet and opportunities. I remember Peat saying 2010 was blown for him with off-season sponsor commitments when he had the rainbow, but that it made sense money-wise.

The woman who just won XC worlds also holds the cyclocross and road jersey for next year. That must command some amazing sponsorship and appearance opportunities.

That analogy holds up to scrutiny as well as the birther movement holds up. The overall field of good riders is smaller at a world championship, because instead of qualifying and riding the fastest on a given course to get to race, your pre-selected by your country, and you end up having racers who would never qualify at a regular world cup on the track. Did you watch the mess that was the start of this race, where there were 2-3 riders on the same section at once smashing into eachother and causing crashes?

Yeah, chances of it being won by somebody who isn't regularly in the top 20 are pretty slim, so when they all say "you have to go all out for a world cup and you can't hold anything back" I think its fair to say that its not as if they can really make themselves go faster then that. You can't go faster then when you're already going as fast as you possibly can. Fuck, the guy that won world champs was talking about how his goal this year was to win a world cup and that was the big thing for him.

I'd be pretty pumped if world champs was no longer a thing and they just added an extra WC race into the season, and gave whoever took the overall the rainbow jersey.

another trivia: Loic Bruni, is the 2nd racer as a former jr. world champion to win the senior mens/elite world champs. The first one to do it is Sam hill.

11th gold for france,

bruni is 4th frenchie ---> gachet, nico x 7, fab x 2, bruni

smart riding wins ! Bruni's right side off the bridge short cut trumps GM's 4+ sec advantage all out sprint at split 1.
And ACC had 9 to herself...so 20 in total?
Add in 3 Jr World Champs for Nico and ACC each plus 1 for Bruni and up to 27 DH World Champs plus ACC added 4 more in Dual Slalom/4x bringing it up to 31. ACC with 16 total rainbow jerseys (13 as a Senior) is a number that nobody will ever surpass. Crazy frenchmen;)

And as much as I like Gwin that downplaying of Worlds is simply because he's never been able to win it. He has had bad luck at the Worlds with some injuries and mechanicals but he's also mortal when it's slick where he's apparently immortal in the dry, I'd say that he's had more than his share of good fortune at WC races weather wise where Danny Hart keeps praying for that torrential sloppy muddy day on a track that's to his advantage.

Either way hats off to Gwin, you don't win 14 World Cup DH races in a 5 year span by accident.

Silly season begins: Bruni's facebook says he and Blenkinsop will be teammates again next season.

Hmmm. Both to Syndicate?

more like Blenki back to Lapierre!?
Syndicate people seem to be tight with Bruni. Strange guess, I know.

Though, it would be weird for Bruni to leave a French team. Blenki back to Lapierre does seem more likely. Also, Bruni publicly announcing his departure from Lapierre in that way would be strange.

Yeti starts a new DH team with Bruni and Blenki. They move to Colorado and are forced to ride SB6C's w/ 40's and start sucking at DH. But do really good at enduro.

I think you might be reading a bit too much between the lines here...

Loic's comment w/ pic of Blenki reaching for the hi-5: "My Bro i fuckn missed you this season, can't wait to be team mates again ..."

Pretty sure Blenki signed a multi-year deal with Norco, and I think Loic re-upped at the start of this year with Lapierre as well. Maybe when their contracts expire, you'll see 'em back on the same team.

You're right, of course; it could be nothing. Maybe just a "wishful thinking" type thing.

Crazy how so many of the top 100 guys looked like complete hacks. That course was tough enough if dry, the grease just made it ridiculous.

Gotta say, if it wasn't Minnaar or Bryceland, happy to see Loic on the top step.

I've always though Gwin's "meh" attitude to worlds was his own personal attempt to stay cool, but it comes off as a little disingenuous - I'm sure his tune might change a bit if he gets the stripes one day.

Maybe he is a homophobe and is anti rainbow stripes

sessler did seem very happy with him winning and i don't recall ever seeing her happy for anyone except her boys.
gwin and bruni seem pretty tight as well...or at least a ton of respect for each other.

Worlds innit? Each nation gets a set No of riders they can send... some countries are just a bit shit at DH but still send their quota of no hopers.
