so I work part time at a big box store working on bikes. we got a bunch of parts laying around that we need to get rid of. company policy says to destroy them and throw them out. the store mgr is ok with us getting rid of them to someone who can put them to use. we have front and rear der., seat posts, cranks, bars, stems, shifters, pedals, wheel sets a few forks but no frames. anyone know a place that could put some of this stuff to use? I thought I remember seeing a story on tv about a place here in Cambridge Mass that recycles old bikes, fixes them up and sells them but can't remember the name of the place. who else could we try to donate this stuff to? I remember someone here building up bikes for kids in need, whoever did that I could probably get some stuff to them. so chime in with suggestions/answers.

Not to be a smartass or anything, an good on ya for doing this, but posting about this on a public forum doesnt seem like the smartest thing to do?

don't see why that would be a problem but if it makes you feel better i will

Well, you have a location in your profile, had a company name in your post, and stated you all were breaking a store policy. Lots of corporations pay attention to what is posted online.

Yeah you were basically telling everyone where you work (now it still says in what town and people might know your online id?) and that you and the store manager are doing things against company policy.
I wouldnt be too thrilled about that if i was your manager.

Again, good job for doing this and im not trying to be a smartass. But i dont think you can be too carefull with this type of stuff.
Just a heads up...

i'm not too worried about it. if by some strange chance they figure out who i am and what store i work in i'll deal with it then. but for now i'll just worry about the task at hand and try to do some good in the community

Iirc...the last guy around here who asked for parts donations to build bikes for less fortunate folks scammed a bunch of us...kept the cool stuff for himself methinks. I know he got a cherry set of HS 33s out of me. Never said so much as a thanks bro...

so Bikes Not Bombs picked up the parts Saturday. talked with the guy for a bit on what they do and he was appreciative for the stuff. told him that i'd try to get some info for him to pitch to the company about them donating the stuff they want us to trash. it's really sad they just trash the stuff when it can be put to good use somewhere in the world. so hopefully i can get them a name, even if it's just the stores in Mass, the amount of parts could be quite significant. i think i must have given them at least 12 wheelsets and a bunch of misc parts. there are 5 stores in Mass alone and another 5 in NH. that could be a huge haul for them. even if it's a once a year thing. so i'll do some digging and hope this happens. maybe something the company can look at country wide and work with others like BnB.
