I was holding a star wingding vigil while awaiting your return. Hope all is well.
I am 1 satisfactory poop away from being released. Hospital food place does not wake up until, 6:30 PM. I am just glad it's done and I can return to activity soon.

Enough about me... how about that president Trump????

Tomorrow we are expecting a high temp of 3*F, a low of -3*F tomorrow night, and a wind chill advisory all day.

So yeah... probably wont be leaving the house tomorrow. Might have to get the wood burning fireplace going to keep the wife/son happy.

Headed up to Maine for a weekend of sledding and perhaps a beer or two. High of 0 forecast, which should feel great at 70mph. May need to pack a scarf.

 on the coffee and Happy Anniversary! Sq-Earl and I go for a bike ride and have a beer afterward to celebrate our anniversaries. We don't do Hallmark crap (though occasionally we will do a card for each other, sometimes the same card for multiple years too).

-6 at my house when I got up. -3 now. Dog did not want anything to do with going outside to do his business and it was a quick one at that. Maybe he can be trained to use the toilet  Last day of school before winter break so it should be chaos at best. I think I'll brew another strong cup of coffee for my hall duty! Heading out to Cortland for a gymnastics tournament this weekend. Syd is really good at this and seems to love it so mom keeps on getting her where she needs to be. Supposed to be super cold so indoor it is for us this weekend with the hopes of getting out on my fatbike next week when it isn't negative double digits.

Mornin!

Happy to report that after several years of carrying a decent CC balance I have as of today paid it all off. Not proud to have racked it up in the first place (some decent reasons, some not so decent) but certainly proud to have it all paid off. What a weight off the ole shoulders.

Cold but I rode to work. My new winter jacket is a beast and primaloft insulated Adidas is my super powers gear.

Had beers last night with resident art man @jstuhlman who came by the house and met the family. We did not get to talk enough about bikes as I had to get to bed to get some sleep before driving to Florida today.

0°F out there this morning. brrr.

fucking fire alarm went off last night at 3:30 am. We have 20ft cathedral ceilings on the second floor, so that meant going downstairs to the basement to grab the 12' step-ladder. friggin hell. this alarm is right above our kids bedrooms and wired in. somehow the kids didn't wake up, but it took me till 5:30 to get back to sleep.

Anyone know anything about fire alarms? can their sensors get dirty? It went off yesterday at 5pm when no one was home (and there was no fire). so I unplugged it, then plugged it back in, brought the ladder back downstairs, and then it went off again, so up I went again with the ladder, unplugged it, replugged it and it stayed silent. till 3:30 am this morning! The thing is, during my renos, the electrician (who I wasn't very impressed by) installed another wired in alarm in the basement. It seems to somehow be connected to the one upstairs, caus' when they're both plugged in, they will go off together. the downstairs alarm is brand new, the upstairs one has been there since we've owned the house, which is 6 years. I don't know how old it is. It's only misfired once before.

I think there's a few possibilities, but I know next to nothing about fire alarms, or electric wiring in houses.
1) the electrician did a shitty job and there's a poor circuit or loose wires in there
2) the old alarm is dirty, possibly as a result of the renos (mudding and painting)
3) ?

Should I just get a new alarm and plug it into the existing wiring upstairs? Should I dispense with wired alarms, and get battery operated ones that are within arms reach and then just replace the batteries once a year?

Maybe I should post this in the buying our first house thread?!?!

The sensors do require cleaning. Also, if they have a battery backup that might need replaced

Don't know about canuckistan, but wired detectors are required here in certain spaces. Also, is the basement alarm near the furnace? Oil or gas?
Swap detector locations to see if problems persist. Drywall dust does fuck them up so a blast of compressed air may help too.

I figured that's why the electrician installed the basement alarm, despite my not asking for one.

I'll blast both units with compressed air, swap their batteries, and swap them locations. and see how that goes.

Oh, and the basement one is about 3' from the gas furnace. But there's a wall between them, with a door.

thanks for the responses...

Find and read the manual for the particular detector you're using, before you start mucking around with compressed air.

Note that unfiltered/undried air from a shop compressor is more likely to do harm than good.

This article recommends vacuuming...

Tired. Haley woke up with a fever around 2am and kept me up until 3:30am. She was totally fine this morning, just a slight cough. Having to break out the tea to get a bit of caffeine going through the system.

Spent last night getting packed for the weekend. I somehow have lost my sound reducing headphones, so the flight is going to suck. My travel will be so light that even in our small carry-on bag things are flopping around. I need to keep a shirt pressed though, so I can't take my backpack even though everything would fit into it. Still debating it though. Any recommendations for good sci-fi/fantasy novels or non-fiction novels to load onto my Kindle?

I just read the Green Mile recently and it was awesome. I could also recommend One Man's Wilderness: An Alaskan Odyssey. Both are quite enthralling.

Good point, I was thinking of the keyboard/camera cleaning air cans not a shop compressor.

Blood Meridian is always one of my first recommendations, best described as "Jane Austin Antimatter". If you are not into something that heavy most everything written by Bill Bryson is informative and highly entertaining. In A Sun-burnt Country is particularly hilarious.

So was A Walk in the Woods. I tried to read a few other Bill Bryson novels but none replicated the amusement I found for that one.

I think Sunburn Country was funnier, Life and times of the thunderbolt kid was also good but not on the same par. The rest of his books aren't as funny but rather informative while still being entertaining. He is one of the few popular authors that have giant bibliographies in the back of his books. Sumbitch does some research.

I called in sick yesterday. Rehearsal went fine last night but then I deteriorated overnight. After a shower I feel more normal (now at work writing papers, in theory) but the true test is afternoon.

Book suggestions for stoney:

- A Song of Ice and Fire (aka the books behind Game of Thrones)
- Terry Pratchett, as he's hilarious
- John MacDonald's Travis McGee series, of which there are many
- Neuromancer (William Gibson)
- The Space Merchants (Frederik Pohl)
- Neal Stephenson, pick any/all

I've already taken down most of those. I started reading PBS' top 100 sci-fi and fantasy models of the last century a few years ago and made a big dent into the list.

Jesus am I sore. Guess I went down on the bicycle a lot harder than I thought yesterday. It's hell getting old. Forced myself out for a 10k, had to walk the big hill and I was super slow, but I did it anyway. Wife and kid are off from school today, so family shenanigans are on the plate.
