Hello Monkies!

Two week ago today I underwent elective CABG surgery to circumvent 5 arterial blockages with 3 bypasses. This was open heart surgery due to stents being deemed unsuitable for the desired outcome.

In my case, at age 50 and in otherwise good health, recovery is expected to be fast and relatively pain free, I’m already off pain management drugs.

The purpose of this post is not sympathy – it’s sharing knowledge; although there were signs they were not big enough to get my attention. I walked into my first annual physical in over 10 years absolutely clueless. That was January 4th 2016.

The reason I went for the physical was simply age – 50 seemed like a good time to start an annual health review.

I have always been a strong recreational biker and could still pull fairly strong all last summer, I had also decided to run a marathon sometime in my 50th year. I started running trails maxing out at 19 miles with 6 mile runs several recovery walks. This is when I noticed that my lungs gave out before my legs were spent, I chalked that up to simply being out of shape for the activity and I cut back on the mileage in order to rebuild cardio capacity. I did this for 90 days and only saw slight improvements. During this same period of time my biking continued to be strong although I never went much over 25 road miles or 12 trail miles.

In the fall I bought an elliptical trainer to help jump start my spring marathon training, using this for 45 minutes created mild chest discomfort that immediately subsided as I slowed my pace. I used the elliptical trainer for about 2 months and never saw any improvement in my capabilities – this is when I began to think something was up.

I am 100% responsible for the situation I am in – here are the facts of my case:

Contributing Factors:

1) Strong family history of death from heart disease of men in their 40s & 50s, women in their 50s and 60s.

2) Uncontrolled high blood pressure

3) Uncontrolled cholesterol and triglycerides

4) Poor diet due to eating out several times a day for years

Positive Factors:

1) Non-smoker

2) Extremely moderate drinker

3) Weight not an issue

4) Not diabetic

So there you go. I’m not sure this will help anyone but you never know. I’m pretty much an open book if anyone has any questions or wants to know about the procedures.

So far I have been very impresses with the speed and quality of service I have received, I should be running again in about 30 days and bicycling again in about 90 days, although both will have to be scaled back until the sternum is fully healed.

I had some of those same issues. My mistake was being chronically dehydrated for a decade. Beer does little to re hydrate you. I had a stroke and barely survived. Heed his advice...

Good you went the pro-active route. Way better than having a massive heart-attack.

Are you going to cardiac rehab ? It was quite beneficial for my dad after his surgery.
This is the good part, I have been approved for 6 months of rehab 2 days per week with all the bells and whistles begining 30 days after surgery or in about 2 weeks. I intend to take full advantage of everything offered and run a half marathon by the end of this year.

Glad to hear your dad benefitted from rehab.

It is much better to plan, emergency procedures rarely achieve the same results. Also super happy that you appear to have fully recovered.

Thank you. The last 6 years have been a struggle. I no longer run blank tape thankfully. I still have vision problems in my right eye when I get anaerobic. They can't fix that without brain surgery. I walked 5 miles on icy crappy snow today, 7 sets of 10 push ups and sit ups, and 4.5 chin ups. I was just fine. I have a exercise log and diet diary for help.

I ate 2 Kilos of Spinach last week. Most of it in liquid form. Its not all so awesome. Without Bacon, Cheese, and a rich creamy fattty dressing. Spinach sucks...
I know your pain, though I don't eat it in liquid form. Spinach is my daily thing, I go through buckets of spinach each week.

Ugh shitty Toronto produce. Expensive and so totally not worth the price.... Your water is pretty awful too.
Its expensive without even going to Whole Foods or some other trendy place. But hey now, I don't drink or have Toronto water :D Luckily I'm north of the city and not in it.

A - glad you're OK.

B - thanks for sharing. It's amazing how many middle aged people get this kind of wake up call. Which leads me to...

C - preventative care is ALWAYS cheaper and frequently more successful than corrective care

D - I had no idea you were so old

E - seriously man, glad you are OK and are on the up and up

Thanks for this thread. Glad you are on the mend. This should be a wake up call for me.

Despite hitting 40 up until a year and a half ago I felt like superman. I could still throw down on the bike and beat most anyone of any age. This summer I fell apart. No energy, gained weight. I attributed it to stress at work, was sleeping little more than 4 hours a night, diet has been crap. Work stress and general malaise have continued to spiral out of control.

I have psoriasis and statistically those with the disease suffer heart attacks and cancer at about 50% higher rates than average and life expectancy in the mid 60s. It was thought that the relationship was due more to lifestyle driven by chronic pain and embarassing skin conditions. Recently direct medical causes have been identified. In other words, I need to get my shit together and treat myself better. That or blow my 401K, cause I won't need it.

Don't just drink the juice better to make a smoothie so you get the fiber.
^^^This, straight juice is actually kind of bad for your, pretty much sugary vitamin water. Might as well wash down a Centrum with a Pepsi.

For now just juice my fiber comes from oatmeal, wholewheat and apples.
I also hope that this event has caused you to take measure of your life and inspire a TBBXC reunion tour.
I do intend to take full advantage of my vacations from here on out, must find Skookum, only JBP claims to know where he is and he's not talking.

I have ridden with Skooks, although it was before his Internet hiatus. Bring your bike next time you visit the rents in atomic land. I will show you what is rideable around here.

I did my homework, there is minimal sugar and the beet juice is cold pressed, total consumption of all juices 16 ounces a day and about 220 calories and very little sodium.

Congrats to being alive Midget! :thumb:

I've been going the beet, carrot, spinach and kale juice for a month now, it's tolerable and about the only way I'll eat my vegetables without salad dressing and bacon
Since living here in Switzerland I seriously wonder why people do all these salad dressings, which mostly consist of cream, mayo and sugar.
In good old Italy you pour just a bit of vinegar from either grapes or apples and some olive oil (full of omega-3 fatty acids) on the salad. That's it.
An ex-colleague even substituted the vinegar with lemon juice, which also tastes good, especially on carrots.

It really doesn't need more to get a salad a little more tasty.

Congratulations on not being dead! Remember, if you don't hate your physical therapist at some point during your recovery they aren't doing it right.

I've been very proactive about my health ever since my accident. Family cancer history aside, it's nice to just have the peace of mind that I'm as healthy as I can be given my circumstances.

beet juice
I'd rather be dead.

I've been going through similar heart issues for the past couple of years. All the MRI, stress tests, CTA, etc. couldn't identify the problem. The best the cardiologists can tell me is "it's not your plumbing, it's your wires". Great. Thanks Doc.

Back in the day we had a good friend die of a heart attack while riding. Young father, strong rider and outwardly very healthy. Since then I'm all over preventative health measures. Getting old sucks some times but I'd like to get much, much older before I'm done.

Glad you're on the mend @Serial Midget ... take care of yourself.

The cardiology unit of the hospital that treated me has a first class physical therapy unit, I've been approved but you never know m if your insurance company will try to find a less expensive alternative.

A family history of cancer would be far more disconcerting for me, many of those that have survived have gone through gruesome treatments that have no guarantee of success. CABG is basically 99% effective.

Thanks for the kind thoughts, hopefully your electrical issues aren't too serious. Maybe potassium?
