moar busy days at work. I don't really feel like doing this work, but a large number of people won't have a job unless I do. and we wouldn't be able to do any work on climate change for a full year so... better get to it.

Mornin!

Currently having new bike lust. Checked out a Transition Scout this weekend and cried a little bit that the entry level model is $3K. I wish I could do frame only but at this point I'm still on a 1 1/8" straight steerer, 20mm front through axle, 135mm rear axle, 27.2mm seatpost, 26" wheels, and a 1x9 drivetrain. It's remarkable I can even muster the motivation to ride given how uncool all that is.

I'm going to demo a Yeti and several Giants and Specialized this weekend, I'm not sure what Yeti but the other bikes are mostly 29 inch wheels and other new standards I'm not yet aware of. My newest bikes bits are are from 2004 - many youngsters are surprised it all still works but I remind them that wheels have always been round.

You can cry all you want but new bikes are nice.

Got the boys up and even mom for some morning running and soccer. I still can't run but finally my leg is doing better. Seems like I may have been too aggressive with the foam roller.

Followed up riding to work with the wife and hopefully a ride tonight.

3rd night in a row of 9+ hours sleep. Feels awesome. History tells me a fourth is unlikely.

Been getting calls from the old workplace about every 3 hours. They are fucked. Not because I am not there, they would have still been fucked, I just don't want to be part of it anymore. Decided I will return calls, but with a minimum 24 hour turn-around

Today is shaping up! No planes in hangar, management is absent, and shit-heel coworker Chief Run-and-Hide apparently found his way into the bottom of a bottle of fire-water and called in "sick" so drunk at 0130 they could barley make out who it even was on the other end of the phone. I may not even have to use my AK.

Bubbling noise from a bong may be more appropriate here.

A few months ago my angry old man neighbor yelled at me to get a job when I was walking my dog at lunch. I failed to mention to him that I work at home knowing that I would soon not be working at home. Started drinking water from a cleaned out beer bottle when I have been working in the yard in the middle of the day.

At some point it's a question of, other than perhaps a couple of pounds (most of which come from my wallet), what benefit will I see from the new bike? It won't make me faster and it won't make me enjoy the ride any more. My current bike has taken care of me for almost a decade now and has done everything from DH to a 24 hour race. It's still pretty relevant and packs some significant sentimental value. Not sure any of that is something I can buy.

Bikes have gotten better over the last decade, but I will argue that they aren't any more fun, less so in many cases. Unless you are racing and seconds are important to you, fuck a new bike. Ride it until it breaks.

Also (as I learned) even the most bad ass old bike is worth little these days.
Your RFX is a bad ass old bike as was mine. Ride it into the dirt and get something new when in the budget.

I really like the geo of new bikes and the quality of the suspension. I took more than a 10 year brake from trail riding and my old bike was not bad in any way but the geo had made it more fun to ride fast and coupled with a good fork like the Pike safer too. That said when I have a bike I like I try to keep it for a long time as I always spend a long time getting it fine tuned to my liking and learning how to ride it. 3rd season on the GT this year and I am sure there are a lot more performance left in that bike.

yea, the difference between 10 years ago and now is pretty astounding. Around this time a lot of the new products from the late 90's & early 2000's (disc brakes, suspension) had finally gotten most of the major bugs out (for the most part) and were actually just starting to get refined. this was the era when bikes (most bikes at least) really stopped sucking. since then the refinement has really continued, and the weights have come down. which, believe it or not, makes a huge difference. as much as we point and laugh at weight weenies, riding a 27 lb bike is a lot nicer than riding a 33 lb bike.

My 29lb bike is loaded into my car and ready for a post-work ride.

New rubber installed, bike all polished up... Should be good. 27lb might be about 2lbs better though.

I am walking a fine line between trying to fix problems and throwing up my hands and letting those responsible sort their own shit out. Neither seems to yielding results. Frustration level is high.

so much better the high end costs the same as a motorcycle?
Yea, this is where I have to draw a line. It's bad enough when every bike I own individually cost more than my first truck, or when the value of the jeep basically doubles every time I throw the Niner on the back, but if the same price point gets me a nice used or new motorcycle, the motorcycle is going to win every time.

There is always crazy high end prices in all categories. Same as you can buy high end motorcycles at insane prices if you want.

Plenty of good bikes good bikes at reasonable prices too. With the right geo and quality suspension design. I would say the only place cheaper bikes lack is front suspension.

Driving a Buick today and tomorrow. Its no wonder that this thing comes with a backup camera, you can't even see out the back of it. The pillars are HOOOOOOOOGE. It also feels like I'm riding in a truck.

I am almost positive that the front left strut on the Subaru is gone or on it's way out. There is some pitting on the chromed section of the strut shaft, right where the strut body seal sits with the car sitting still. I'm not very impressed, considering how much these Bilstein struts cost. To note, the front right literally fell apart two weeks ago. They've only been on the car since last summer. :banghead:

I've been in the process of purchasing a motorcycle shop for the last four months. Now that I'm a week into escrow I decided it was time to let my current job know. I announced at our bimonthly office meeting this morning. It went well and that's a huge weight off my chest. Beers will be consumed this evening.
