why would you want to turn a trail bike into a bike you can't trail ride?

You should definitely do that. Don't let these guys discourage you. There's a good reason you see so many nomads with DC downhill forks on them. You won't see them in real life or the internet but that's just because the owners want to protect the secret.
Isn't this essentially what the Gwinduro, and Richie Rude's DH6c are? Not that that means the headtube won't file for divorce, but it seemed to work pretty not-terrible for Gwin.
I don't particularly see the point other than for park laps in less than stellar parks, but for a very specific set of trails, it should/could/mite work fairly well with a 170mm 40 for when the 36 is too flexy.
