anyone have some guide rsc's just stop working? Was cruising on a trail grabbed some rear and front brake and my rear lever was frozen in place and i ended up eating shit because i came into the off camber flat corner way too hot. Tried to spin the pad contact and it unfroze the lever but the lever isn't pushing any fluid so the rear doesn't actually work. And the pad contact wheel has a ton of play in compared to the front. Anyone hear of this before? get it warrantied? buy a rebuild kit? Brake is 4 rides old.......

Try it nao?

Coworker's front Guide RSC did exactly that. Was working one day and the next it wasn't. Good ol' SRAM.

2 pairs of guide RSC's, no problems yet.

It would be really nice if we could get a functioning and reliable brake from someone. Auto makers have been doing it for years, it's not really all that complicated of a process.

If you remove the boot that covers the compression fitting, does it say stealth-a-ma-jig? What bike is it on?

problem in the US is that pads / replacement bits / spares for hope brakes are harder to come by in a pinch. most shops stock sram / shimano stuff.

yeah, steah thingy, had to buy a fucking 8t torx key, who the fuck has thoes? 2016 yeti sb6c. They are being sent in for warranty and the shops putting on XT's as we speak.

That and Mike Levy can't get his mouth off Shimano's balls so they never have any incentive to fix the numerous problems with all their current brakes - AND it discourages sales and sales networks for smaller brake brands that are superior in at least some ways.

I do think they have potential, but perfect they aren't (currently in possession of 2x leaking and squeaking new XTs, to add to the list of failed sets I've seen).

While we're wishing for better brakes - physically bigger pads and shorter lever throws all round thanks... and bring back the 220/225mm rotors!

(In Data's voice)"I'm not sure what "replacement bits / spares" for Hope are captain. My intelligence tells me you don't need those parts for Hope brakes."

Seriously, I bought all the parts necessary to re-bleed these brakes when I cut the hoses. Come to find out on Hopes you can reuse all the hardware. As far as pads, 2 pair come with each set. Order a pair or 2 for backup. I never walked into a shop and asked for Code pads and got "Sure! I have organic and sintered. How many?" It's always, "Sure. I can order those tomorrow and get them in a couple days."

What happens is, the compression fitting doesn't get torqued correctly, or the compression olive gets installed wrong, which causes the line to pinch or get blocked by some similar happenstance. Thus, resulting in the lever locking up.

hrm, i guess that could be an issue. I used the sram installation guide and a torque wrench...4th ride failure seems like the line would be pinched from the get go if it was fucked up (think of the children's) It also dosent explain the pad contact wheel being completely loose and the lever working but pusing no fluid. Its as if the connecting rod from the lever isn't making contact with the master cylinder.

i always wanted to try rotors larger than 203 to help slow down my mass/ass
650b makes it more critical as well since we've lost braking force as a result (shorter lever arm over contact patch). I'm surprised it hasn't driven companies into bringing them back.

How is the performance and weight compared to a straight Saint and straight Magura setup?
Theoretically performance will be essentially identical to XT or using XT (Ø22mm) calipers in the same scenario, as the MTS caliper has the same 22mm pistons as the MT6 and MT8 I'm pretty sure. Power would be less than Saint but lever throw would be improved (shorter). Benefits would include avoiding leaky XT calipers and flimsy / flexy Magura lever bodies in favour of more solid / more ergonomic Shimano one.

im sure we'll see a new "standard" come out again. i always wondered what happened after seeing some DH guys with the larger rotors and why no one really had any products out there.

The larger rotors are heavy as shit. No doubt you could make them light, but a Hayes v9 is like 50g heavier than a 203.

I'm anxious to try out the maguras. I was not impressed by the formulas and the vee/saints were more expensive.

Put on a set of Hope V4s recently, so far so good. Managed to get one second hand, so the cost of the set wasn't too ridiculous but they're not cheap. Despite the looks and braided hoses, they came in a few grams lighter than the old M810 Saints I'd previously run for several years although significantly heavier than the Guide RSCs they replaced.

First brake I've purchased where they include spare pads in the box, along with the usual olives and barbs. Power is plentiful, although with less initial grabbiness/bite than Saints. Some people prefer that instant bite though so that could be a killer for them. First brakes I've owned that haven't had the bite point vary during a run, although I'll see if that stays the same as the pads wear down. I have a feeling Saint pads will fit in the calipers fine, might even try a set of the Saint heatsink pads if I get bored and feel rich enough which could change the bite characteristics?

There is a tiny squeak from the rear but the rotors are old (running a shimano XT Ice tech rear/formula front for no particular reason). The 2nd hand rear came with the Hope ventilated disc but it's stupidly heavy and unnecessary for where I live.

I wasn't overly stoked on the Guide RSCs - the bite point changed more than I would like on longer runs and they weren't super powerful. They might end up on my Scout once the X7 Trail brakes die like I expected they would months ago. Ugly things just keep working fine though.

Nah, it's just the Hayes that's that heavy. It's an old design in fairness. Modern 220-225mm rotors from Hope and particularly Formula were quite light, they just vanished unfortunately - likely due to lack of demand.

You can see a light one on Fabien Cousine's bike here:
http://www.pinkbike.com/news/fabien-cousines-polygon-collosus-dh9-ultimate-bike-check.html

Almost positive it's a modified Formula with the spider re-painted afterwards. Sneaky, and a lot of attention to detail.

it ended up being a warranty issue that they "have never seen before" New brake is in route. I will say Srams warranty dept is on it.
