Come on, it was the 90s and early 2000s. It didn't matter if it made sense. They literally threw all the shit on the wall to see what would stick. If you could dream it, you could prototype it and get it in MBA magazine.

No kidding. I can remember seeing suspension forks being used as rear suspension for pro DH at an early 90's Norba National.

i still just want to see somebody build a floating linkage for a normal fork.
I've looked into this. Floating caliper with a push rod connecting to the crown.
Trouble is, to get reasonable amounts of anti-dive, the brake link needs to be quite long (about the same length as the wheel radius).
If the brake link is shorter (aka neater), there would be so much anti-dive that the fork would top-out under braking.

I find these linkage forks pretty interesting from the perspective of axle path, anti-dive, and the way trail changes throughout travel. But they're all pretty ugly, and that's the bottom line for most people.
