I have decided my thermal rest pad is no longer adequate or comfortable. While it does keep me warm I want something different. I know most of you are so hard core you sleep directly on the ground with no pad at all, for the rest of you, any suggestions? I'm also considering a 2 man cot tent. Anyone with any experience?

I have an REI Cirrus inflatable that has a synthetic down fill for insulation. Although it is no longer made other manufacturers make a similar pad. They are light, warm and way more comfortable than the thermarests of a similar size. It is 78"x25"x 3.5" and weighs 1 pound 13 oz and packs really small

I use the Klymit insulated static V. Good enough for me at 160# to sleep sideways and not touch the ground. They have several styles and non-insulated as well. Keeps me warm and comfortable. I use it in Tents and hammocks.

Is this for car camping or backpacking?

For car camping I use a really thick thermarest style mattress. I find it super comfy.

For backpacking a foldable closed cell foam jobber.
This will be for car camping, as I have primarily bike packed with a trailer I made most of my prior decisions based on weight and size. Now that car camping is the direction I am heading, comfort will be key.

Well I really like my 3" thermarest. I actually prefer it to crappy guest beds when staying with friends.

Don't get the 2-man tent-cot, they're way to big and heavy to lug around, even if traveling by car. They're also not nealry as comfortable as they should be when you think about how big and heavy they are.

I dig my self inflating thermarest, and my cheap foam ridgerest mattress isn't half bad either. However for strictly car camping, I don't see the need to spend more than whatever Amazon will sell an inflatable for.

I don't like inflatable mattresses. they don't breathe. I wind up sleeping in a puddle of sweat - gross! I have the thickest therm-a-rest that self-inflates (not the one with the extra memory foam topper), and I quite like it. Sometimes I think a cot would work well, but given that I like to sleep on my stomach and hang off the edge of my mattress, the frames don't seem like they would be a good idea.
