How to make a Rock Shox Yari not feel like Butt?

New bike has a Yari and apparently the ends of both stanchions are sealed off. This effectively results in a fork that does fork things through maybe 60% of it's travel before it transitions to butt mode. For those unaware, butt mode is a sudden transition where the damper feels like a cement slurry has been introduced into the damper circuit.

The chassis is actually really sorted out and the Moco damper, while somewhat basic, was an OK enough thing in 2012 Revelation I had. What's frustrating is that the old Revelation can do paces around this Yari.

Outside of replacing the damper, has anyone else messed around with one of these?

Assemble it with the lowers fully compressed. If both sides compressed is too much then try one compressed, one extended. Laugh all you want but it makes a tonne of difference in feel to this fork in particular and it's free, so try it. Put a Luftkappe in it if you want to spend some money.

Thanks for the suggestion. I suppose before trying the 'assemble stanchions to pull a vacuum thing' I ought to do the zip tie burp trick if for some reason they've pulled in air....

Now how do I make my Fox 34 not feel like ass?
For my 2013, it was with a PUSH upgrade Factory Fork System or whatever their top upgrade is. They removed the CTD nonsense and replaced it with new internals offering HSC and LSC adjustments. Surprisingly, I found their suggested pressure, rebound, LSC and HSC nearly unrideable...but I rapidly found a setup I was happy with.

Pricy upgrade, but IME the best way to make a Fox fork not feel like ass.

I thought the Mission Control damping was at least worth salvaging. Without that, I'd chuck the moco for sure and drop an Avy cart in.

I have an Avy cart in a Boxxer that may be able to be reworked by Craig for the Yari. I suppose I wanted to see what 'low tech' optimization could be employed before going down that rabbit hole.

The add a vacuum to the lowers suggestion seems like a reasonable starting point.....

While getting an Avy cart might be a bit more hassle up front I would go that route as soon as I got any type of RS fork that they are available for. Such a difference, especially to the MiCo and MoCo dampers that plain suck in comparison. Back when I bike bummed a few seasons I always was such an experience breaking out the spare stock Boxxer and ride it for a day and relive the nostalgia of hand cramps, diving and spiking......always became a "short" day out in the park

I got the Yari, before putting in an Avy Cartridge I wanted to at least get the fork working ok. With very little mIles on the fork I re greased everything. New oil in the loweres since they were dry. With the Damper The fork needs more rebound control than you think it would. A lot less compression than I would like. And at least one less token than suggested.

Revelation was pretty good for it's time. Pretty expected it would perform better than a Yari. With RS you also will get differences fork to fork for the same model due to their way of manufacturing (larger production volume than most, at a cheaper price. RS guts aren't nearly as well made as Fox, for instance). Their guts are pretty cheap and have enough variance that fork to fork will often be different. I believe some of the shock guys w dynos reported this in the past about inconsistencies. Same people have praised RS castings as being good and that makes sense given the volume.

The butt mode your mentioning is more pronounce the more the travel your fork has. Steve from vorsprung wrote something about it in the comments section of the luftkappe review on PB. In short a 180mm yari will be too progressive for most, a 170mm will be too progressive for some riders and the 160mm would be pretty ok for everybody.
A damper taking up less volume should be a move in the right direction.

This is a 160mm 29er Yari. Thinking about bumping to 180mm. Sounds like something will need to give on the damper side since doing a monthly compressed rebuild/assembly is insane.

This is a 160mm 29er Yari. Thinking about bumping to 180mm. Sounds like something will need to give on the damper side since doing a monthly compressed rebuild/assembly is insane.
My 2 cents, I have a 160mm pike and 120mm Yari, installed a luftkappe on both. The difference after installing on the 160mm pike was much more noticeable than my 120mm Yari. This seems to backup Steve's comments about the effects of the Luftkappe being more noticeable on the longer travel versions. My Yari has felt pretty good in general before and after the 'kappe FWIW, but it's on my hardtail @ 120mm.
