If your total budget is $1500, the Marin Hawk Hill could be a good start when buying new. If MTB won't be your new big thing and you'd like to stay on the road most of your time, you could lurk in Pinkbike's classifieds looking for a good used bike.

My buddy has the Hawk hill, great bike. 130/130 travel i think. The Diamondback release 1 is also a good one if you find it on sale for that price like i did. 150/130.

if you're wanting to buy new you're going to need to step your budget up a bit for a full sus. these are good starting points

I'd have to agree with slimshady, for that budget you can definitely find a Diamondback Release on sale easy. Just keep your eye out on sites like Chain Reaction Cycles, they are running ab awesome summer sale right now.
