Those were kind of a @Gary tyre that added “excitement” to every ride.
WTF dude?
Those things are full on "special". I find it hard to believe anyone ever walked out of a shop carrying something that stupid unless they were just taking it out to the bin.
I like super predictable tyres that drift nicely and don't clog and have a nice edge to rail once leant over.
One glance says those things break every one of my rules!

To be honest, shit like this never bothered me. The thing I think many of you are forgetting, is that lots of people are literally retarded. They're not putting that "E-MTB ready" label on for you. They're putting it on so that when some dweeb walks into a bike shop, and the employee is trying to explain that "yes, a regular tire works just fucking fine on an emtb," they don't have to spend 4 hours explaining it. They can just point to the label and say "yup, this one is for you."

I guess I shouldn't say retarded. I know plenty of developmentally disabled people who aren't that fucking stupid, and it does them a disservice to be compared to these troglodytes. Anyway, moral is, people are dumb, and like to have stuff specifically labeled for them so that they feel different and unique. This is just an example of specialized making an improvement to its product in the cheapest way possible!

I'd hit that. But only if the industry lizards provided the e-bike I get to race on. You know, like a demo/test race ebike. Thanks lizards! Spread the e-bike word. I'm sure the environmentalists/sierra club/IMBA clubs will come around if you keep up the propaganda. Just like fracking and the oil companies :D
See, they had that at Sea Otter. if you were Industry, free e bike to race. maybe woulda been fun.

The thing is, I was busy racing my..uh, my bio bike...no, my analog fucking bike....whatever.

There-in lies part of the problem. I LOVE motorcycles. I have owned and raced a bunch.

But I LOVE bikes. bikes with no motor. Relatively light bikes that depend on me and me only, to determine speed. I like that. I also like that it doesn't add to the general e-craze of toxic battery waste.

Ride E bikes. Have fun. I might. But for the sake of all things unholy, just admit it's a motorcycle or moped or whatever you want to call it and let's move on.

Latest news, Mammoth and other U.S. ski resorts announced massive E-bike programs. So there.

Well, I normally don't like to shit on independent small fabricators, because they're just doing what makes them happy, but this dude has been spouting off bullshit for as long as I can remember, well over a decade of continuous bullshit.

Moral of the story:

"Don't make something. Somebody else has done it better and cheaper."
"There is a commercially available product that is lighter and cheaper than what I want"
"However, the commercially available product looks relatively normal. I'm after something that looks more..."
"Well, more like an erect dong, to be honest. Without further ado, the erectastem"

This dude is too much.

Fwiw it seems like pvd’s day job is in fabrication, and he seems pretty good at that. Outside of that however, he has quite the reputation. Was wondering who would be the first to bring it up.

Yeah, I don't want to for a variety of reasons - he's not really industry, he's just some dude who likes to tinker with his shit to try and get it to fit himself better, and I got no beef with that.

Problem is, he's kept a steady stream of misinformation said confidently that lures new riders into a deathspiral of bullshit stupid marketing through his blog, and even though he's not selling anything, he's still convincing people of stupid shit.

About the only good thing he's done is realize that downhillers are better at figuring out optimal mountain bike geometry, and that longer front centers, longer wheel bases, slacker HA, and shorter stems with low BB's ride pretty well.

i remember one time he put mineral oil in brakes that needed DOT (or was it vice versa?) just to see what happened.

PvD is an extremely amusing character- his work is always worth a read. It's about a 50-50 mix between actually really good ideas, and complete fucking lunacy. This gooseneck stem falls solidly into the lunacy camp.

I do respect that he does a lot of his own fabrication and engineering, and seems to actually get geometry for agressive-use bikes.

I really don't give a shit about mineral vs DOT fluid...what we really need are brakes that use bourbon. That way, if you have Shimano brakes, at least you could enjoy yourself when you have to bleed them all the time.
that's why i have a bottle of tequila and a bottle of rum in my workshop. and the beerfridge is closeby.

You should seriously consider at least adding a Bourbon and perhaps a nice Gin to your setup. Since you're in the US, I guess a few unlabeled Mason jars filled with Moonshine would be on order as well, although I guess availability will depend on the state you're in (I'd love to taste that stuff...).

I'm not gonna read that, but I will say I hate DOT personally.
Would rather mineral oil in all my bikes, since I prefer to do my own bleeds. Not worth trying to switch my Codes over tho.

slimshady

¡Mira, una ardilla!
My two sets of DOT based Formulas are dead stupid to bleed. Seriously, coming from Avid brakes when I watched the tutorial videos on YouTube I thought "this guy must be kidding me, there's no way you could have a decent bleed in less than 5 minutes". Then I tried it myself and after lifting my jaw from the floor I had to accept they were simply well designed.
