So I admittedly am not sure what I'm looking at. Were the Fox 40's on the 29ers stickered as "49"(?) If so, is Gwin actually riding the 29er at Worlds, because the photo shows it with a "40" on the front. I'm in denial regarding 29ers so I'm not up on what the components look like. Also appears that he has the Aquilla's on there..again, I'm not aware of whether or not they are made in a 29" size..

looks like the standard 27" bike. i'm also guessing with the lead time to paint, they didn't have the 29" bike ready to go.

Damn. Was counting on him being one of the smaller wheel holdouts smoking the field. Obviously La Bresse hasn't fazed him in his 29er experiment. Ah well, won't be too disappointed if he crashes out and doesn't shake hands.

Gee is going along as a substitute which is cool. There's still a chance we might see him race after all.
Some of the World Champ bike paintjobs are unreal also. Given some riders claim to not care about the Champs, it sure is surprising how much effort and expense goes into the kit and bikes for it.

Why invite all the teams, with a set amount of people, and not let them all race? So it sounds like only the top 80 will race, but this "qualifying" won't actually change the start order. So if you were a top ten guy all year, but are unprotected and end up getting a flat in this pointless qualifying thing, you'd be out...?

Pretty much. I've seen arguments on both sides. Fearon saying you ought to be able to represent your country - you might travel all the way from Namibia to Lenzerheide and not get to race. Marcelo saying some people are turning up so unprepared it's unsafe for them - e.g. the dude at Champery with an enduro bike, walking down the hill. Tricky one...
Hmmm. I can see arguments on both sides. My gut reaction is that top 80 is a little too restrictive. They should find a criterion that weeds out the "unprepared" people... maybe a % of the time of the fastest qualifier? I get that Redbull doesn't want to broadcast 4 hours of people like me riding down the hill, but if they put the time, money and effort to be there, an arbitrary # like "top 80" seems... well... arbitrary?
If you're invited, you should be able to ride. That's how it always was, wasn't it? Its not like the amount of participants suddenly went up.
As for someone coming unprepared, walking or otherwise; in my opinion that's on them. Sign the waiver or whatever and take the risk. No different than riding any other trail. Granted, no one wants to see someone get injured or more importantly, in this case, have to clean up the mess afterwards.

Reverse Megavalanche rules, if you don't crack the top 80 for the big show you go down in a single mass start wave before the start of men's finals. Winner gets to wear the coveted rainbow skinsuit for the entirety of the next fifth-tier national series they qualified from in the first place, flaunting their superiority in the face of the two other guys from Kazakhstan who own mountainbikes. Yakety Sax is obviously being played over the course PA while this occurs.
Yeah. Tricky for sure. I watched the live feed of the Asian Championships about a couple of years back because my friend was racing and had a decent shot at the podium (flatted unfortunately). However, some slower competitors could not even clear the doubles near the finish line. If there is a very large gap in ability then the slowest riders will always get caught and could cause accidents and ruin the chances of others.
The guy who won the Asian Champs that day, Kazuki Shimizu has qualified 58th for this year's world champs in Lenzerheide. My friend has beaten him once (but on home turf) and I wonder how he would have fared if our national federation had the resources to send him to Switzerland and given him a chance to qualify especially because not all world cup regulars, e.g. Gee, would be there.
On the other hand, I also feel that world champs is a celebration of cycling and that representatives of all nations who came should be at the starting line on race day.
Seems media driven more than anything. The limit on how many riders get on each roster should filter out the riders who can't even make it down the track, no? A qualification requirement also seems at odds with the "one shot for glory" aspect of Worlds.
