I've seen the opposite hey - guys that are two or three hour walks away from help with a flat tyre and nothing on them. No tube, no mobile, barely enough water. I don't think they'd die even in the hottest summer day here but its still retarded. No mobile in snake territory is pretty much asking for a bad day though.

I carry waaay too much shit on trail rides (first aid kit and folding saw) and I imagine the ideal amount is a lot less than what I bother lugging around.

Same. Actually, I hope the Lab Austere pack will help me reduce the amount of shit I carry around.

Yeah I wouldn't mind one just for the lazy arvo laps I do that take me 5-10 kms from home. Keep the MULE for the expeditions etc.

Making fun of people for using fanny packs must give you all kinds of street cred on the playground with the other kids. #superimpressed
Leaving aside my poor sense of humor, what @marshalolson has achieved is awesome. Instead of trying to cram as much shit as possible in the traditional hip pack form factor, he has started from the ground up, thinking of how to carry what you need in the most efficient way.

Seriously guys, sharing an internet cubicle with folks smart and aware enough to think of the real needs of the riders is one of my main drivers to come back to the monkey on a daily basis.

After being off the bike for ~2 months, I finally got to use my Lab Austere pack. @marshalolson, it's definitely the best I've used, it's small, but has room for exactly what I want to carry: extra water bottle, rain jacket (in the 2nd bottle area), wallet, phone, keys, multi tool, and some extra calories. It doesn't bounce around, and the belt doesn't loosen and need to be readjusted every time it is removed.

On a similar note, I got a relatively cheap one from the overrun store. It is branded The North Face although I suspect it may be an imitation (what people here would call "class A").

It has two water bottle holders and has side straps plus elastic string thingy to keep the bottles from bouncing off. I wish it had straps to pull them closer to the body. Plenty of room which also made me realize maybe I carry too much stuff given that I don't go very far these days. Aside from the bottles it can fit a spare tube, pump, tire levers, first aid kit, phone, keys, ID, money, spare brake pads, multi-tool, snacks and even a shock pump if I wanted to. :busted:

But then I ride alone nearly all of the time so maybe I need them. I'm not going back to hydration packs that's for sure.

Patagonia has a sweet one coming out in February, been rocking it for the past year. Has a mini reservoir and pretty dialed internal pocketing, super comfy as well.

In hell. Welcome!
Lab Austere pack is still my go to riding accessory 90% of the time. It gets soaked through in very wet rides, but dries quickly and mud is easy to brush off. Still the perfect size, not too big, not too small, loving it.

I have become a monkey-sheep.
Just pulled the trigger on one of @marshalolson masculinity reduction devices.
Hopefully my bike doesn't laugh at me too much.

I also finally got to properly test the Lab Austere pack this summer.

I really have no complaints. It's perfect and I don't see myself using a big pack for anything other than big rides where I need to bring a lot of stuff.

man, we have been testing the limits of the fanny lately.... 4 big (i consider these big) rides so far. 20+miles, 5-6k climb, All done with a dakine fanny with the 2k ml bladder. I run a bottle on the frame for backup but used it once on the 40m day.

I also have full assortment of tools between a one up pump and edc tool , and a tube with lever and co2 on the frame. Breakfast burrito in the pack along with 1000cal of cashews and real food bars. Weed for pain killers and some salt pils when things go sideways.

I have brought a sawyer squeeze water filter on 2 of the rides and not used it......so fuck backpacks and there damn straps that fuck up my shoulders.

Do they even know where the Patagonia is? Asking for a friend...
Oh they know. The founder was there to honor part of the acquisition. They bought up a bunch of it, kicked off natives and now let it serve as a refuge for wandering rich white people.
