Im chaseing some creaks in my Megatrail. One thing that ive had to mess with is this insert. Mine protrudes through the frame (on the hub side) maybe a 1/16 if an inch. It almost always seems to move out flush. Could be a cause for the creaking. Im thinking it would make the shoulder not seat right and let it wiggle. Is this an issue? Should it be flush? Maybe a some shimzs under the shoulder of the insert? Maybe i need a new bike with coilz.

I just went and looked at it its much smaller than 1/16, but definetly more than catching a finger nail.

I would tighten the pinch bolt with that nut insert flush on the hub side.
It’s not common for the rear axle to creak, but it can happen. Standard clean, regrease, and tightening it has fixed it whenever I’ve seen them creak. Check under the axle head as well.

Also try loosening, cleaning, regrease and reassemble the main pivot axle. When people are having trouble finding a creak, sometimes that’s it.

Turns out the creak is most likely the cassette. I can recreate it with my chain whip. Still curious about the insert tho. Thanks for the help.
