I have zero knowledge on the subject, but i do know that a solid axle is better than a fluid axle!
jd ... do you mean a thru-axle, like a 15mm or 20mm axle? Is your hub an ISO disc hub or older non-disc hub?
If the hub is a large diameter (LD) you can switch to 20mm or 15mm. If the hub is small diameter (SD) you can only switch to 15mm. You can order pretty much any axle online.

Double check but I'm 99% sure you can put this in any q/r LD hub. If it's really REALLY old, I'd think a call to CK is worth it.
edit: is the fork boost? if not, cool. if so, you'll have other issues.
Weld it, then use an angle grinder.

Not true. See Walmart bikes with truly solid axles, threaded for axle nuts +/- a flat ground into them to fit into the stamped steel dropouts.
We used to use the cheap solid axles for doing what I loosely refer to as 'Trials' when the hollow ones would break. They were also marginally stiffer.
