@mtg - if someone wanted to get on the bandwagon and run a 295er Megatrail, would it be as simple as removing the 15mm cup and putting a 29er fork and wheel on the front?

@Da Peach I’m 5’8 but all torso and short legs. I have the smash size 3 and in short mode, and I love it. It’s my first 29 bike. I have always liked large bikes when sitting on them but the seat tube mast was always to tall for a dropper over 100mm. My other bike is a medium 2014 reign with a 55mm stem. I ride the 3 gg with a 35mm stem. I get to the same place butt to hands more or less.

Sounds the same as me. I've got a 30" inseam.

How do you find your bike in the tighter/slower trails? Not too ungainly? I'm not sure what sort of terrain you have in your neck of the woods.

I have three rides on it so far. One was typical Xc southwest desert nothing hard. But it did have a small amount of steep slick rock to climb and descend (this was the first day in the long tt position) the area was in Placitas it’s right outside of town, Mustang ally, Highvoltage, random slick rock, Chalkdust. Second day was in Glorieta much better testing grounds. Chili dog, Janker DH, and Jagged Axe (Short tt position where it still is). Climbing is up quickly and super fun descending lots of real rough “enduro trails” the BME is going to be there again this month riding most of what I did. Today was in Otero, loose square edge climbing single track. You maybe asking why I bother mentioning trails but MTB project has all the trails listed you can at least see what it’s been on, Glorieta has a Nate Hills POV as well, maybe someone else has YouTube edits of said trails. When it was in the long tt position it had very little front end wander while climbing, honestly I was surprised. The short position had more but nothing more than modern bikes have. The bike climbs great I made two tech climbs today first try, ones that I struggle with on all other bikes. Some of that is the 29 and 165mm cranks. As I get used to 29 I am gaining more precision. Something I miss about 26 or 27.5 The only time today was a trials like 180* front wheel pivot. Wheels got in the way, but trials is not my thing at all. Bike and company is ace! I hope that helps.
Short answer- I had no problems with some tight square edge switch backs and short tech climbs.

Yes. And that was on purpose, as lizard repellent. I’m planning on doing that for the Red Bull Burner and Whistler this year. Then, back to Trail Pistol for general trail riding.

By the way Peach my inseam is about 30 too, my size 3 has a 170 oneUp post and I don’t think I need to shim it shorter. But it is balls deep as the phrase goes.

Holy crap. That's a lot of drop! I'd not thought of that. I'll likely be getting a oneup as well, so I'll have to check on insertion lengths to optimize balls depth.

BTW, other than the carbonness, are the new versions of the megatrail much different from the alu version? I'm reading all the reviews. Not too many on the new version that I've managed to find.

The current oneUp has been great for a number of customers but one and they are on it great group of folks to buy from. The 210 v2 it slated for mid June if I remember right.

Tweaked a little in a few ways: slacker head angle, a little longer stays, 5mm more travel in Trail Mode, GeoAdjust, shorter seat tube, lower stand over, better water bottle location, improved frame storage kit.

Lower standover is nice for sure. The longer stays don't worry me, they're about the same as my old bike.

I guess the general ride characteristics will be similar to the older version though. I read a PB review mentioning a preference for trail mode, so a little extra travel in that mode is kinda nice for my daily drives.

giggity.

What's the deal with the 15mm cup? Extended lower headset cup to compensate for shorter non-wagon wheel forks?

Nah man, you ride tight shit right out your door. You don't live in the desert where avg speed is around 30mph. It comes in spurts when you're in a rain forest. You need to be able to yank up, not look two miles ahead with the wind muting out your thinkin noises.
But... trendz!!!

Look at the wheelbase numbers on a size 3 and compare that to every other bike you've ever owned.

If that's the way you want to go cool. I just like to be able to lift the front wheel on my mountain cycles.

Technology is getting better if you ever decide to fix that.
We doin spine replacements now? I'm in!
