A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and he carries his banners openly. But the traitor moves among those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not traitor, he speaks in the accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their garments, and he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of a city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to be feared." - Cicero, 42 B.C.

It's sad that this is news... the term fourth estate has been around for a long time I'd imagine. [goes to check Wikipedia - holy shit, it's been in use since 1787!] I find the WaPo's slogan captures it neatly, and is particularly sagacious: "Democracy Dies in Darkness"

I find it horrifying that WaPo's story on the "Afghanistan papers" appears to be getting no traction. What should be pulitzer winning, absolute fucking bomb shell of a story will disappear just like the Panama Papers story.

Interesting times. :twitch:

Edit:
A reminder that this happened:
Right after Barr paid ol' Rupert a visit too! Unrelated, I'm sure.

The rise of an American theocracy looks like it is on-track.

Same with Republican voters. Party over country, conscious and reason.

Even for the farmers and workers that are getting screwed by him. Better to have a rich white man put his boot on your neck than to be led by brown skin or someone with boobs.
You misspelled "southern strategy".

“I’ll tell you what’s at the bottom of it. If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.”

― Lyndon B. Johnson

I spent a few hours yesterday or so trying to follow the evolution of this sickness. It goes back further than I thought and never seems to go away. We deserve to become extinct.
