Yeah, I really like Shimano's drivetrains, but this is really lame. I get why they didn't use XD and am fine with that, but making it a pain in the ass for people to buy their parts aftermarket and instead just chasing OEM business seems unlikely to be in their best interest long term.

I hope this is just a case of them focusing their efforts on the OEM side to start, rather than a deliberate decision to shun the aftermarket. Given the struggles they've had getting the XTR stuff to market (hubs, cranks, ditching the 11 speed cassette) it does seem possible that this is more of an issue with bandwidth on their end to manage all this stuff.

I really haven’t looked into this all that closely, but am I seeing this correctly? They spent all this time and R&D and are STILL doing two completely loose cogs on the outside edge of microspline because “fuck you”???
they knew you would make angry comments on the internet

It’s not the last two, those at least have a little more bite, but the skinny ones. The thing is that despite this new spline interface and 12 speeds, shimano is still stuck in 1996.

or maybe they're just not so out of touch with consumers that they're forcing them to buy an entire new several hundred dollar cassette if a single cog breaks.

I broke the carrier once, never broke a cog. I mean we could just change out the skippy ones when they wear if this was really viable? It’s usually never the high (small) ones first.

once or twice i cracked the larger cogs, but at those times i was in a position i was able to replace the whole cassette (had spares kicking around, or housemates did). i swear you used to be able to source sections of the clusters. granted this was 15 years ago. :lizards:

I replaced the large cluster on my 11 speed 11-40 XTR cassette a couple of times. I think eBay or Germany were the source.

If Shimano doesn't expand the licensing, I will be staying on XD/e13.

I'm getting close to buying a new fancy rear hub/wheel, so will wait to see how this shakes out. I'd rather buy a Hadley, King or Hope than a DT hub...

I really want to be back to full Shimano shifting, including cassette. :(

You can not get SRAM out of Europe to USA/Canada, but you can still get Shimano. I just got a set of XTR trail pedals out of R2-Bike for a bit less than half the cost domestically. (Canukistan, so even more stupid priced than the US of A)

Does anyone make a metal bleed funnel for Shimano brakes. At my shop we're sick of the threads eventually dying on the plastic funnels. It seems like Abbey Bike Tools or someone similar should make this.
Another thing that sucks: Did you know the road bike brakes have a larger hole and need an adapter screwed onto the funnel?

Ah yes, which I figure is the same reason they put fins on the bleed blocks, which make it impossible to insert them from the outside.

I blame internet riding.

Internet -riders are always obsessed with bikes "looking clean", whether that's power washing and waxing the frame and bearings after every ride, or removing/hiding every cable possible.

I have long ass cables and hoses so they don't pop if I rag doll and the bars spin around 2x in the crash. My bike is always muddy, because I ride through stream crossings 4 days a week.

Drilling holes in your bars because you need to not have any visible lines probably deserves to be here

I don't have kids, but whenever a pre-teen sees me on my mountain bike, he either asks me if it's an e-bike or tells me he's going to get an e-bike soon.

The advertising push towards kids is in full swing.

It's funny, cause we were told e-MTBs were for the elderly dudes who used to love pedaling but now they are injured.
Funny, I see a ton of guys riding an e-bike despite being a reasonably in shape 40ish year old dudes. Their excuse is always the same, to keep up with his 16 year old. Their 16 year old kids are also on, you guessed it, e bikes :banghead:

That dynamic is not present here...because NOBODY in Jackson has kids at 24. There is still too much powder to be slayed, bruh

I have as many BB tools as the number of MTBs I own.

I just got a Wheels Manufacturing BB to replace the Race Face BB on my Nomad. I'm not even changing the crank spindle standard/interface - alas, now I have to buy yet another BB tool.

When I got my E-13 BB I said "F-this shit". Put it on with a strap wrench. Universal BB tool.
