I just used an old ISIS bb tool to install a new Cinch chainring, so I guess I’m glad I didn’t throw out that 2 lb chunk of steel 12 years ago.

i just buy the same cheap xt bottom bracket every few years and replace when trashed. at $20 it's probably cheaper than some other company's effing tool, let alone bb.
The new XT BBs need a smaller tool than the old ones, but in their defence they include an adaptor in the pack with the BB that lets you use the old tool.

XTR has been like that for a while, XT now too? Unfortunately the tool is plastic and kind of sucks...

my biggest concern on this is that the smaller bearing wouldn't last as long, but that hasn't seemed to be the case (at least for me). but yea, the plastic adapter is definitely annoying. does anyone make a proper tool for it?

I've changed one now due to crunchiness, in a timeframe that seemed less than the older style with the bigger bearings. But will see how its replacement goes before deciding if they're rubbish. I dropped the extra $15 (dollar dollar bills y'all) for the XTR version on my new trailbike just to see if it is better in any way (science bitch!).

The old Gold colour Saint ones with the longer threads were the money IMHO for lasting bloody forever as well as looking heckin sweet. If the silver BB52 or whatever it is called was black or anything but raw metal colour I'd just run those, but the Gold is worth the extra $10, especially if you have to match with Kashima.

That will leave 15mm hubs extinct.

As someone noted, Rockshox will make the fork/hub/axle some fucked up taper that won't work with anything else.
Ah yes, but will it really? Or will they go back to 15mm 8 years down the road when everyone has gone through the 15mm stock? I have a theory, that when things are near perfection, the industry has to make a sudden change and fuck it up, because we can't have people with good parts and stuff that lasts a long time and works well. So when Marzocchi came up with RC3 V2 Evo or whatever, emulating the Avy cart, on forks like the 55 Ti and 44, it was time to ditch that stuff and use the strange bleeding-cartridge that came after, or 12 speed eagle compared to 11 speed, and so on. So 20mm will be temporary, just long enough for you to start thinking that maybe this is actually a good idea, vs. 15mm and skinny QRs. If it's too good, the Lizard Control Group will force the manufacturer to change standards.

Who among us couldn't have guessed/wanted the the return of 20mm, but who guessed 12x110 boost! Road boost I tell ya, Lizards be lizarding!
