I had the BEST vacation and I hate to be home. We raced first up in Sandpoint Idaho, then drove to Bend, Oregon for a week of riding. We rode nothing but singletrack for 5 days and it was all awesome. Thanks to Aaron for showing us around two of the days and pointing us towards the two FABULOUS breweries in town! I successfully drank beer everyday of my vacation..some days a little too much probably.:D

I have tons of pics so be patient.

The race course in Idaho was failry brutal. There was not an easy section...all very technical. Here's Derek in the dusty tree section.

They cut the women's course down to two laps of 10.8 miles so I was kind of bummed because I've been training for longer. I had to step up the intensity since it was a shorter race and man I was pooped towards the end. I actually contemplated quiting but then thought of Tyler Hamilton.

This is my second lap and I'm headed up the long hill climb. SO tired!!!

This rock helped me make up time during the race. It doesn't look like much but it's kind of tricky in real life and a lot of the women were walking it.

OK, on to Bend, Oregon.

The McKenzie River ride was completely awesome. We started with more climbing than we expected, but it's all good. This was the day it was 100+ degrees!

I can't begin to explain how completely awesome this ride was. Pics do it hardly any justice - you must go for yourself. First you risk your life on lava rocks that are just itching to rip open your elbow or knee. Then you twist through forests, then you ride along the river. Oh, and don't forget the waterfalls!

We rode another day at a place called Shevlin Park and then continued on to do Mrazek trail. It's a cool ride really close to town, all singletrack.

Another day, *sigh* more singletrack to ride. This day we took Tumalo Falls trail up and then North Fork further up, then we bombed down another section of Mrazek, and Farewell Trail. We figured shoot, we climbed North Fork, we might as well climb South Fork too! So up we went were we were treated to great views and nice trails as usual!

Here is Tumalo Falls:

More falls shots. All of these are on the climb up.

Me on a cool little bridge while Derek got eaten alive by bugs.

The trail down winds fast and furiously through the trees - little room for error at top speed. Reflexes were important!

This was wonderful to see. Not once, but TWICE it says NO HORSES!

These log jumps kept you alert!

More tight trees.

Much later after climbing for about 5 more miles we are treated to views of these moutains...I think Broken Top was the name.

There were cool little huts everywhere, equiped with a big stove and a huge supply of firewood for the cold winters.

Artsy shot:

the original was pretty too.

Yet another day of 25+ miles all singletrack. What a rough life. Today we rode in an area called Lava Lakes. The trail had huge lava rock sections to keep your heart pounding.

The shading in this picture makes my butt look big.

Crashes on the lava rocks simply cannot happen, that would hurt.

The last day Aaron joined us for a ride out in Oakridge, Oregon. There is some awesome riding out there, it's also the site of the Cascade Cream Puff 100. We rode somewhere around 30 miles but the temps were much cooler then the other days. We were lost less than 15% of the time supposedly. We were advised against climbing up the singletrack at the start of the ride, but we gave that advice a big old PFFFFFT and started up the immediate 1800' climb. That was in about 8 miles and then we tacked on some more to total around 4700' of climbing for the day.

I regret not taking more pictures this day as the trail was amazing. In some areas it was really more like freeriding as the trail was so overgrown and rocky. I had soo much fun trying to keep up with Aaron on the descents and a few times I came close to crashing.

It looks like Indian Pipe, but I thought that only grew in the Northeast.

Safety is undetermined and it is possibly toxic as it contains several glycosides. It is not recommended that you use this plant internally.

Sweet pics! :thumb:

OK, now I am jealous.. drool... I have heard so much that the McKenzie River trail totally rules!!! next time...

The sparks lava trail is fun, I did it in 100 degree heat and dust last year... nothing like a swim when you finally get to the lake. and you are sooo right about not wanting to crash on the lava rock...

sounds like you had a great trip! Did you hit the Deschutes Brewery?

Great stuff! Looks like you all had a good time. :)

Now for the real question: Did Heidi kick Ridemonkey's ass OR did Ridemonkey kick Heidi's ass? :D

Deschutes makes some of the best beer in the world IMO. I LOVE Mirror Pond Pale Ale and their seasonal Jubile Ale is nice too.

They had a seasonal Cinder Cone Red that I drank until they ran out. Then I switched to Mirror Pond. :)

Amazing. That's about all there is to be said. Time to add Bend onto the ongoing list of places to take the Mt. bike. Glad you had an awesome bike vacation. It's amazing what a week of riding does for the brain.

Bend is fun, but I would recommend ( and I bet Heidi will second) that the middle of summer is NOT the best time to be there. It gets really, really hot. Unless riding in 100 degree heat at elevation is your idea of a fun time....

Well, I have no problem with heat. I love it.:) The elevation of Bend is only 3,672. I'm doing my research. Anyone know of an accounting position (tax specific) in Bend?:p
