If you look at most of the high pivot frames like Commencal's, Norco, Deviate, and others, they are single pivot frames using a swing arm in the shape of a triangle. They are not a "triangulated" swing arm. Canfield and the Dark Owl are true triangulated rear ends. Stiffness is achieved by...
@Sandwich, Never ridden the BMW bikes, but I use a similar design but with some very key differences. No cracks and stiff enough. Those who have been/are on them do not feel they are flexy. Sexy yes, but not flexy. One guy has put 4 seasons on his. I weigh 195lbs geared up and can't say I...
All legitimate pro's and cons brought up. Price wise, as a whole the industry has gone crazy I think. These are mountain bikes we are slaying down mountain sides. You can potentially destroy your frame the first ride if you are hitting gnarly stuff and have a moment. We try to keep the price...
Wanted to post up a long term review of this Pinion gearbox. I have been on it for 2 years now of consistent riding with a little summer resort time. One friend and customer has slayed his with like 10 resort days last summer and some this summer.
To give a background of my set up and...
Finished a 24" ripper for younger kids. This employs the slight frame modification using a straight tube and a shock yoke. The previous split frame design restricted what shocks could be used and it was heavier. We tried using some very light tubes with it to keep the frame in a weight range...
Just wanted to let you guys know we have posted a video on our webpage: peregrineindustry.com or go to our pinkbike page to view it.
Slight modification to allow any rear shocks to be used. It keeps the frame weight in the range we want to hit. stronger and lighter.
I am looking at either an Onyx or Profile rear hub also for running with the pinion. It is not too noticeable going dh as long as you don't really back pedal.
High pivots are the way to go. Been riding them for years now. Won't go back to a low pivot. Not too keen on all the aesthetics of that bike, but it is going to ride nicer than all the low pivot designs
I agree Rembrandt. I really would not care to keep mountain biking if I had to go back to a derailleur bike. I have had no chain or shifting issues. It is just a clean setup where not much can go wrong on the outside.
Sounds sweet ianjenn. And yes the range is incredible with the P12. Forget the SRAM Eagle with a big old derailleur. No 1 x setup can compete with the range. And the problem with a 1 x is when you are on a DH run in the small gears out back, there is so much chain slop and not enough...
Personally, I will never go back to a derailluer bike. The whole weight thing for me is a non-issue. And when you get too light I either break stuff (and I have a hard time trusting the wall thickness on these light carbon frames when you have a good crash) or it can feel like you get bucked...
You want to run a high engagement rear hub if you are the picky type about that. The box has a bit of rotation on the free hub. For me it is not a big deal with the DT Swiss 340 I have.
I have been waiting to get some Hopes too. One thing that I think they hit the bar on (from what I have read from others) is there bite point adjustment. Will be getting my own in the near future.
You could use a fixed rear hub with the Pinion. I would never want to though. You will have the chain constantly turning. This will create too much drag while coasting and also have the chance of getting something (shoelace, pant leg) ripped off in it on a descent. You would also have a...
If you use a high engagement rear hub that helps, but the degree of rotation on the free wheel in the box could be better. It is not a glaring issue and not noticable most of the time. Just those times when your on a ridge 2 feet wide with death drops on either side and you are crawling into a...
By the way, I climb every ride we do. Some are pretty steep grades 1.5 - 3 miles . Mine is a DH bike and the lowest gear makes fairly nice to climb. Good workout, but still have enough legs for the DH.
So I have been on the Pinion for about four months. Riding it 2-3 times each week. It is setup with a 30t front sprocket and 30t rear sprocket, so 1:1 external gearing. The range in the box is incredible. The lowest gear feels like a 22t front and like a 38t or 40t rear. On the highest...
No pedal kickback. Chain is neutral on the suspension. The routing takes care of that. It pedals very good too because naturally a high pivot has good antisquat without having to resort to special linkage setups to try to achieve that at sag. So the bike is also super plush on the descents
I still pedal my full DH bike up all the trails. I just like riding the DH bike and having that extra cushion. I pedal up to go down so I could care less if it takes me a few minutes longer to climb. And the Pinion gearing is so low it makes it nice.
